Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release
BULLIES REWIND: The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies took 3 of a possible 6 points over their first three games-in-three nights of the season last week. The Bullies fell to Trenton 2-1 on Friday, defeated Reading 1-0 on Saturday, and fell in a shootout at Wheeling 2-1 on Sunday. Atlantic City departs Wednesday to begin an 8-day, 5-game road trip on Friday in Peoria against the Rivermen.
Friday, Trenton's Scott Bertoli tallied the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal at 7:34 of the third period to lead the Trenton Titans to a 2-1 victory over the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies before 4,486 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. The Bullies (1-2-0) opened the scoring at 3:12 of the second period when Derek Edwardson from the right-wing circle slapped the puck through Trenton goaltender Andrew Allen for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Edwardson's first as a professional. Trenton (3-0-0) would respond with a two-man advantage power play goal just 26 seconds into the third period when Leon Hayward tipped the puck past Bullies goaltender Adam Munro to tie the score 1-1 and set up Bertoli's heroics. Trenton out-shot Atlantic City 31-27. Munro (1-2-0) made 29 saves in taking the loss. The Bullies went 0-7 on the power play.
Saturday, Bullies forward Jason Notermann tallied the game's only goal and goaltender Jake Moreland stopped all 37 Reading shots to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 1-0 victory over the Reading Royals before 2100 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. Notermann gave the Bullies (2-2-0) a 1-0 lead and the eventual game-winning goal at 5:47 of the first period on the power play when from behind the net, he tipped the puck over the crossbar and off the back of Reading goaltender Barry Brust. Moreland (1-0-0) took over after and the Bullies defense killed off 4 Reading power plays. Reading (0-3-0) out-shot the Bullies 37-24. The Bullies went 1-3 on the power play.
Sunday, Kenny Corupe tallied the game-winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout to lead the Wheeling Nailers to a 2-1 win over the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies before 2431 at WesBanco Arena. After a scoreless first period, Wheeling's James Laux gave the Nailers (2-3-0) a 1-0 lead in the second when his slap shot from the high slot beat Bullies goaltender Adam Munro at 5:49 on the power play. The Bullies (2-2-1) would tally the equalizer when on a delayed penalty against Luke Curtin and Wheeling goaltender Danny Sabourin off the ice for an extra attacker, Nailers defenseman Cliff Loya knocked the puck into his own net at 14:15 of the third period to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team could find the back of the net in the final minutes, and the game would progress to overtime and the eventual shootout where the Nailers won it. Atlantic City out-shot the Nailers 34-33. Munro (1-2-1) made 32 saves in the loss. The Bullies went 0-4 on the power play.
BULLIES "TOP DAWG" AWARD: Each Monday from now until the end of the season, Public Relations and Broadcasting Manager Dan Weiss will select the Bullies "Top Dawg" for the week. This week's winner is goaltender Jake Moreland who stopped all 37 Reading shots on Saturday to record his first shutout of the season and third overall of his career. Honorable mention goes out to forward Luke Curtin who tallied a goal and an assist and was the only Bullies player with a multiple point weekend.
OFFENSE STUCK IN NEUTRAL: With just three goals in three games over the weekend, the Bullies have tallied a total of 8 goals in 5 games and rank 27th in the ECHL in offense averaging 1.60 goals per game. Of the teams that have already played 5 games, the Bullies 8 goals are the fewest. The Florida Everblades by contrast have notched 22 goals in their first 5 games.
DEFENSE IN HIGH GEAR: While the Bullies total offense ranks near the bottom of the ECHL, Atlantic City's defense has been nearly flawless. The Bullies have surrendered just 9 goals in their first 5 games and rank third in total defense averaging 1.80 goals against per game. Ironically, of the teams that have already played 5 games, the Bullies 9 goals allowed are by far the fewest.
399 AND COUNTING: With his second goal of the season on Sunday in Wheeling, Bullies forward Luke Curtin is 1 point shy of recording his 400th career point. When Curtin accomplishes the feat, he will become the second Bullies player to record his 400th career point in an Atlantic City uniform joining the recently retired Stefan Rivard. Rivard recorded his 400th career point in his 499th career game during a 7-1 victory on December 14, 2003 at Wheeling. Curtin meanwhile looks poised to crack the 400-point barrier in less than 400 games. The Roseville, MN native started in his 377th game at Wheeling on Sunday.
LUV YA PURPLE: With Saturday's 1-0 win over Reading, the Bullies are now 19-6-3 lifetime against the Royals, their best record against any divisional opponent. Luke Curtin has 15 points in his last 10 against Reading.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Bullies are in the midst of six consecutive road games away from Historic Boardwalk Hall, their longest stretch away from home this season. Atlantic City will depart on Wednesday for an 8-day, 5-game road trip that will take the team a season-high 2,720 miles. The Bullies don't return home until Saturday, November 13 when they host the Trenton Titans. Playing 8 out of their first 10 games on the road, the Bullies will have logged 4,594 miles prior to Thanksgiving. Once the Bullies do return home, they will enjoy a season-high 7-game home stand.
POWER PLAY FOR UNITED WAY: For a second consecutive season, the Bullies have teamed up with United Way to support the Power Play For United Way. For every power play goal the Bullies score in 2004-05, area businesses including Baumgardner Construction, RLS CopiScan, AtlantiCare, and Glenn Insurance will donate $10 to the United Way of Atlantic County. So far, the Bullies have tallied 3 power play goals, good for $120 towards Power Play For United Way.
