Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Trevor Koenig posted 42 saves and Darren Clark scored twice as San Diego avoided a three-game sweep with a 5-2 victory over Alaska before 4,518 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.
For the third straight game in this series and for the fourth time in their five contests thus far, the Aces scored first, as Olivier Filion scored with Alaska's first shot on goal 5:57 into the opening period, beating Koenig five-hole after taking a perfect pass from defenseman Mike Clarke at center ice. Evgueni Nourislamov tied the game 1-1 at 10:20 on a San Diego power play, and the Gulls grabbed the lead 47 seconds later when Brian Gornick deked Aces goalie Lance Mayes out of position, then deposited a backhander into the net.
Trailing 2-1 midway through the second period, Alaska not only failed to convert numerous power play opportunities but fell further behind when Billy Tibbetts picked up a loose puck with his team shorthanded and rifled a slap shot past an apparently fooled Mayes at 13:07. Clark, who had been stopped by Mayes on an earlier breakaway, converted his second chance at a one-on-one with the goaltender at 11:29 of the third period to increase the lead to 4-1, and later widened the margin to four goals by scoring off the rush with 5:03 left in the game. Kimbi Daniels blasted a slapper past Koenig with 2:01 remaining, ending a streak of 41 consecutive saves, but the goal merely reduced the final margin. Clarke received credit for his second assist of the night on the scoring play.
The Aces enjoyed a +17 advantage in shots on goal, including 29-14 over the last two periods, but once again were hurt by their ineffective power play, which came up empty in eight chances and is 1-for-32 thus far in 2004-05. Alaska saw its five-game winning streak against the Gulls come to an end.
The Aces begin a seven-game road trip Tuesday in Centennial Garden against unbeaten Bakersfield (3-0). The puck drops at 6:05 p.m. ADT, with live coverage on AM 750 KFQD and at www.alaskaaces.com. Alaska will meet San Diego (2-2-1) for the fourth time in five games Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. ADT, a game that also will be available via video webcast at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks.
