Gulls Weekly Update
November 1, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ The San Diego Gulls had to face some adversity last weekend in Anchorage, Alaska... It was the Aces' home opener... They were short-handed with available players... The Aces eliminated them from last season's playoffs... Plus they had to face NHL star Scott Gomez, making his ECHL debut... All things considered, the Gulls didn't do too bad, coming away with three of a possible six points.
The series started Friday in front of the first of back-to-back standing room only crowds at Sullivan Arena. The Alaska faithful went home happy as their Aces skated to a shootout victory. The Aces won Saturday convincingly before the Gulls salvaged the final game of series on Halloween Sunday.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Oct. 29 @ Alaska:
Gomez notched an assist and a shootout goal, helping Alaska beat the Gulls 3-2. The Aces drew first blood in the contest before the Gulls grabbed the lead with two straight goals. San Diego's lead was short-lived however as Alaska tied it up 34 seconds later. That's how the game stayed until the Aces won it in the shootout.
Oct. 30 @ Alaska:
Mike Scott scored a pair, while Gomez chipped in with two assists, as the Aces won the second game of the series, 4-1. It was a 1-1 game after the first period, but Alaska netted two in the second and one more in the third. Aces netminder Peter Aubry did the rest, finishing the game with 25 saves. Mathieu Chouinard also finished with 25 saves, but suffered the loss.
Oct. 31 @ Alaska:
Game three of the series was a different story as the Gulls turned things around and skated away with a 5-2 victory. Darren Clark led the way with two goals, both coming in the third period. Billy Tibbetts chipped in with a goal and an assist and Trevor Koenig turned aside 42 of 44 shots.
PLAYER NOTES:
Tibbetts has scored a goal in four straight games. He leads the club with four goals overall... Clark is now in the midst of a four-game point streak. He leads the Gulls with seven points... Koenig stopped 42 of 44 shots in Sunday's win at Alaska. He is 2-0-1 with a 1.95 goals-against average and .942 save percentage... Sean O'Connor remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks... Sylvain Deschatelets remains on the injured list, recovering from off-season wrist surgery...
TEAM NOTES:
San Diego is now 2-5-1 in its last eight games at Sullivan Arena... The Gulls are 1-4-1 overall in their last six contests against the Aces. That includes Alaska's three-game sweep in last season's Kelly Cup Playoffs... The Gulls are 1-0-0 at home and 1-2-1 on the road this season...
The Gulls will get another chance at the Aces Wednesday when the Blue and Orange open a brief two-game homestand. San Diego hosts the Florida Everblades Thursday before going back on the road. The contest against Alaska will be the first "Wacky Wednesday" of the season, featuring the "Real Political Battle" hockey game. Thursday's game against Florida is the first "Thirsty Thursday" with discounts on drinks and hot dogs. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.
Wednesday is also a "Win-Win" night. If the Gulls beat the Aces, fans can exchange their ticket for a FREE ticket to Thursday's game against the Everblades. "WE WIN, YOU WIN."
