Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Salt Lake City, Utah - The Fresno Grizzlies allowed three unanswered runs after the sixth inning as they fell 6-4 to the Salt Lake Bees in the series finale on Sunday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Leading 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Fresno reliever Jake Dunning, spelling starter Mike Kickham, struck out Trent Oeltjen to lead off the inning, but a wild pitch on strike three allowed Oeltjen to reach first. After advancing to third on hit-and-run single by Jacob Hester, Oeltjen tied the game when he scored on Roberto Lopez's single. Another wild pitch later in the seventh, this time by Dan Runzler, allowed Hester to score with two outs to return the lead back to Salt Lake for good, 5-4.
The Grizzlies were forced to come back early on after Salt Lake scored a run in the first. Peter Bourjos led off the game for the Bees with a walk and was later driven in by Luis Jimenez to make it 1-0.
Fresno tied the game in the second when, after Gary Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Carter Jurica was also drilled to force home Johnny Monell.
Jurica drove in his second run of the game on an RBI single in the fourth inning. It was his lone hit of the game, but still extended his hitting streak to eight games, matching his season-high.
After Kole Calhoun hit a two-run home run for Salt Lake following a leadoff walk issued by Kickham in the fourth, the Grizzlies scored a pair of runs of their own in the fifth. Todd Linden plated Chris Dominguez with a sacrifice fly while Jackson Williams hit an RBI triple to score Monell.
Monell joined Brown as the two Grizzlies batters who had multi-hit efforts. Monell finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Brown was 2-for-3 with two hit by pitches. The Grizzlies were hit by a pitch four different times in the game.
Dunning did not record an out to the three batters he faced in the losing decision. He was charged with two runs on two hits.
Fernando Cabrera picked up the win for Salt Lake after tossing two shutout innings of relief.
Dan Carpenter earned his first save of the season with a shutout ninth inning.
Kickham tossed a quality start despite receiving a no-decision. The left-hander allowed three runs over six innings and walked four while striking out two.
Runzler surrendered an RBI single to Oeltjen in the eighth. Runzler allowed the one run over two innings pitched.
The Grizzlies, who have lost 15 of their last 19 games, return home to start an eight-game homestand on Monday. The first part of the long homestand is a four-game series against Tucson. Right-hander Austin Fleet will start for Fresno, while Tucson has yet to name their starting pitcher for the series opener.
