Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Carlos Torres' complete-game effort led the Las Vegas 51s to a 7-1 win over the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.
Torres held Tacoma to two hits, both singles, and struck out four on the way to collecting his fifth consecutive winning decision. The right-hander retired 18 of the first 19 Rainiers batters he faced in the contest before infielder Brad Miller led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a base hit.
Tacoma cut a 2-0 deficit in half after Miller eventually scored from third on Rich Poythress' ground out, but Brandon Hicks' grand slam home run highlighted a five-run frame for the 51s in the eighth.
Miller's single in the seventh inning extended his hitting streak to ten games - tying the shortstop with Dustin Ackley as the owners of the longest active streaks on the team. The shortstop is batting .417 over that ten-game stretch with 12 runs scored, six extra-base hits and 16 RBI.
Starter Brandon Maurer (0-1) was dealt the loss despite holding the 51s to just one run on five hits over 6.0 innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out six in his second start with Tacoma this season.
The Rainiers (38-26) hit the road to play a four-game series at Las Vegas (33-28) that is set to begin at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 10. Right-hander Hector Noesi (0-0, 10.80) is scheduled to start the series opener against 51s right-hander Chris Schwinden (3-5, 5.72)
