Round Rock Express News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Round Rock Express (35-29) scored in each of the first five innings but the pitching staff allowed 10 runs on 14 hits, including three long balls, as the Iowa Cubs (28-34) went on to win their third straight game over the E-Train Sunday afternoon 10-7.

The bats were hot in the early going, scoring seven runs through the first five frames but Iowa seemed to answer every score, eventually delivering the knock-out blow in the latter innings.

Shortstop Yangervis Solarte got the E-Train offense started with a RBI single in the bottom of the first, but a 1-0 lead would be far from enough Sunday afternoon.

Iowa plated two off Round Rock starter Scott Richmond in the bottom half of the first frame to quickly erase the deficit. Center fielder Brett Jackson and designated hitter Brad Nelson hit back-to-back solo shots to put the I-Cubs up 2-1 just four batters into the home half of the inning.

The Express retook the lead in the top of the second, scoring two runs, one on a RBI ground out by one of the newest members of the E-Train, center fielder Jared Hoying. A RBI single off the bat of second baseman Greg Miclat pushed the second run across as Round Rock grabbed a 3-2 advantage.

Richmond limited the damage in the bottom of the second after Iowa loaded the bases. The right-hander allowed just one run to score, walking left fielder Dave Sappelt to force third baseman Junior Lake across the plate, which knotted the score at three apiece.

Solarte was once again in the middle of the action in the top of the third, singling with one out and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Right fielder Joey Butler brought Solarte around on a RBI double to put the E-Train back in the lead at 4-3.

The one-run advantage would be short-lived as the I-Cubs erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third, two coming on a RBI double off the bat of shortstop Brent Lillibridge before Richmond exited the game.

Southpaw Joseph Ortiz took over and helped the Express out of the inning by recording the final out. The left-hander went on to toss 3.1 innings in relief, allowing just one run in his second appearance with the E-Train this season.

Hoying cut into Iowa's lead in the fourth, homering to begin the frame, his first at the Triple-A level which brought the score to 7-5. Miclat followed with a single and stole second to put himself in scoring position. A single by catcher Robinson Chirinos put Miclat on third before the second baseman scored on a wild pitch for the second Express run of the inning.

A RBI single gave the I-Cubs a run in the bottom of the fourth, putting Iowa ahead by two runs at 8-6. Butler quickly cut Iowa's lead in half with a solo shot to start the fifth, pulling the E-Train within one at 8-7.

After nine hits and seven runs through the first five innings, the Express offense scuffled, managing just one hit over the final four frames. A two-run shot by Nelson in the eighth, his second on the day, made the final score 10-7 as the E-Train dropped its third straight game to the I-Cubs.

Iowa starter Brooks Raley (5-4) earned the victory while Richmond suffered his first loss, dropping him to 1-1 after allowing seven runs over 2.2 innings of work.

Round Rock will return to Dell Diamond on Monday night to open a four-game set against the Albuquerque Isotopes at 7:05 p.m. Monday will be $1.00 hot dogs and sodas at Dell Diamond, presented by Mrs Baird's as well as the Principal Financial Dreams Tour.
