Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Cubs (27-34) beat the Round Rock Express (35-28) 5-4 tonight to complete a sweep of today's day/night double-header at Principal Park. The Cubs pulled even with the Express in this series and improved to 7-1 in double-header games this year.
The Cubs jumped on Express starter Lisalverto Bonilla quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Logan Watkins led off with a single and Brent Lillibridge followed with a homer to straightaway center field. The Cubs added another run in the second when Junior Lake doubled, stole third, and scored on a long single by Darnell McDonald.
Cubs' starter Barret Loux came off the disabled list today and pitched three innings in his first game since May 26. He allowed one run in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by Engel Beltre. Lefty Jeff Antigua came in to pitch the fourth and gave up doubles to Aaron Cunningham and Joey Butler that pulled the Express within one at 3-2.
The Cubs answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lake led off with a bunt single, moved to second on an infield hit by Donnie Murphy, and raced for third when Greg Miclat's glove flip to second base after a diving stop floated over the head of shortstop Yangervis Solarte and rolled away on the infield grass. McDonald followed with another base hit to drive in Lake and J.C. Boscan dropped down a bunt hit to load the bases. After a strikeout, Yoshi Tateyama came in for Bonilla and got a popout for the second out of the inning. Brett Jackson came through with a clutch two-out hit that drove in Murphy, but Butler threw out McDonald at the plate from right field to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Cunningham walked and Solarte singled before Antigua struck out the next two batters. The Cubs brought in right-hander Marcus Hatley, who allowed an infield hit that loaded the bases and then walked Jim Adduci to force in a run that cut the Cubs' lead to 5-3. Hatley struck out Eli Whiteside to end the inning and worked a scoreless seventh.
Hisanori Takahashi allowed back-to-back hits to start the top of the eighth, but worked out of the jam. He went back to the mound for the ninth. With one out, Cunningham reached on a fielding error by Lake at third base. After a strikeout, the Cubs brought in Brian Schlitter to face Butler. Butler reached on a bad-hop single that went off Watkins' glove at second base. Mike Olt followed with a slow ground ball to third that Lake fielded, but threw in the dirt past Ian Stewart at first base for his second error of the inning. Cunningham scored and runners were at second and third for Bianucci who ended the game with a comebacker to Schlitter for the final out.
Antigua (1-1) was credited with his first triple-A win. Bonilla (4-4) was charged with the loss. Schlitter earned his first save with Iowa this season.
The Cubs and Express wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05. LH Brooks Raley (4-4, 4.27) will start for the Cubs against RH Sean Richmond (1-0, 3.68) for the Express. The gates will open at 11:35 for a family day and food pantry day at Principal Park. Kids can run the bases after the game sponsored by Safeco Insurance. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 12:45.
