Three-Goal Second Leads Fargo Past Lincoln
December 2, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release
Jared Mangan scored his fourth goal of the season but the Fargo Force scored three second-period goals to defeat the Lincoln Stars, 4-1, on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Lincoln (12-7) saw its six-game home winning streak come to an end and lost for the first time at the Ice Box since Sep. 30. Fargo (13-3-0-3) earned at least one point for a ninth consecutive game.
"I thought we started out well," Stars head coach Rocky Russo said. "We had some good chances. We were sticking to our gameplan, creating some offense in the right places and defending in transition well. We started off on the right foot but unfortunately we weren't able to keep it going."
Mangan put Lincoln up 1-0 at 7:22 of the second by redirecting a shot from Cole Crusberg-Roseen. Brennan Ali earned the secondary assist for his third point in the last two games.
The Stars' early lead lasted 13 seconds as the Force won the ensuing faceoff and Kyle Smolen crashed the net to tie the game up. Ty Henricks scored the eventual game-winner just over six minutes later by taking the puck from the red line up ice and letting loose a wrister just in front of the goal line on the left side that found the back of the net. Anthony Menghini scored at 15:55 for the final goal of the second period and JP Turner scored the lone goal of the third period at the 8:37 mark.
Lincoln's killed off both Fargo power plays to improve to 8-for-8 over the last three games. The Stars lead the USHL in penalty-kill percentage with an 85.7-percent mark.
Stars defenseman Henry Nelson made his season debut after missing the first 18 games due to injury. He recorded three shots on goal to tie for the team lead.
The Stars get a chance to bounce back on Saturday when they face the Force again at 6:05 p.m. for Superhero Night and Guy's Night Out. Fans can purchase a McDonald's Four Pack and get four tickets and two inflatable hockey sticks for $65 by purchasing a package at lincolnstars.com.
