Lancers Get Their Revenge Over The Musketeers

December 2, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Omaha Lancers News Release

OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers continued their I-29 rivalry with the Sioux City Musketeers Friday night. The Lancers had come into this game losing 13 of their 17 regular season meetings with the Musketeers. The Lancers however, had held a 70-44-15-5 regular season record dating back to the fall of '02 against the Muskies coming into this game.

The first period opened with energetic, sharp play from the Lancers. Goaltender Kevin Pasche picked up where he left off in Fargo last Saturday, as he was in the zone from the warmups all the way through the opening frame.

Omaha's energetic play would pay off as forward Vincent Salice found the back of the net after forward Andon Cerbone kicked it loose to find Salice on the backdoor, making it 1-0 Omaha.

Sioux City would continue to face pressure from the Lancers, but Sioux City's fundamentally sound play held Omaha to just a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.

In the second period Sioux City would respond, starting with forward Grant Slukynsky who rips it top shelf after a pass from forward Tyler Hotsen from below the goal line as he was falling to the ice. A goal that you have to tip your cap to the Musketeers.

Shortly thereafter, Omaha would get the first powerplay opportunity of the night, and the Lancers responded with authority. After forward Alex Bump dumps it in on the rush, Omaha would set it up, and it was forward Justin Stupka who would cash in to put Omaha back in front 2-1.

However, coming right back was the Musketeers, as a shot from the point by defenseman Finn Loftus found the back of the cage, as forward Ben Poitras screens Pasche to knot it back up at 2 apiece to end the second period.

The third period opened with it being all Sioux City, but it quickly became "The Kevin Pasche Show" as the Swiss goaltender stopped all third period shots from the Muskies.

Later in the third the Lancers began to take control with a flurry of scoring chances, but to no avail.

However, with just over a minute to go, it was Omaha forward Ryan Kusler who deflected a Max Wattvil shot from the point to give Omaha the late 3-2 lead.

Not too long after, forward Lancer forward Griffin Jurecki would end it with an empty net goal after using his prolific speed to beat out Sioux City defenders to the puck, and it was the Lancers who prevailed 4-2.

The Lancers are back in action tomorrow night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena against the Tri-City Storm at 6:05 CST in what should be an entertaining matchup. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports.
