One Comeback Not Enough Friday
December 2, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks dug out from a two-goal hole, but the Sioux Falls Stampede did all the scoring after that Friday night at Young Arena, topping the home team 6-2.
The four-goal loss is the largest the Hawks have absorbed this season. It also ended a streak of seven consecutive home wins. Waterloo's overall winning streak had ended last weekend in Cedar Rapids.
The Stampede carried play for chunks of the opening period but went ahead at 3:29 of the second during a power play. Maxim Strbak's one-timer from the right point was a misfire when his stick broke. However, the puck slithered to Sam Harris at the top of the crease, and Harris poked it in.
Harris struck again at 7:53. Chasing down a puck inside the blue line after eluding a defender, Harris' first try was denied, but the rebound came right back to his stick for a tap in.
Waterloo rallied to tie the game in the later half of the second with a pair of scoring rushes. At 11:24, Gavin O'Connell sprang Gavin Lindberg through the neutral zone. Lindberg stopped quickly in the left circle, feeding a pass across the slot to Garrett Schifsky, who spiked home the feed.
Then at 17:02, Myles Hilman fired a rolling puck from just above the left dot. It cleared Xavier Medina's glove but found its way under the crossbar to level the teams.
Sioux Falls went ahead for good at 3:23 of the third when Chris Pelosi located a loose puck and had an open side, scoring from just outside the crease. Jaksen Panzer was in a similar spot and in similar circumstances when he added to the lead at 8:03. Ninety-one seconds later, Maddox Fleming came barreling into the crease, colliding with Jack Spicer; the puck followed off the stick of Nick Ring, with the Waterloo netminder unable to slide to his left.
The Hawks lifted Spicer with more than five minutes remaining but could not rally with an extra attacker. Instead, Evan Murr scored into an empty Waterloo net from deep in his own zone as 2:18 remained.
The teams are the same with only the start time different on Saturday. Waterloo hosts Sioux Falls at 6:05 p.m. The matchup is the next in a series of Signature Saturdays; after the game, meet select Black Hawks players on the concourse for autographs.
