OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League have announced the acquisition of Defenseman, William Smith (2003) from the Muskegon Lumberjacks in exchange for a 2024 phase II, 6th round draft pick. Smith was picked up in a unique series of transactions as the Sioux City Musketeers sent Smith to the Lumberjacks in the earlier hours of Thursday, December 1st. But, just hours later the Lancers and Lumberjacks sparked a transaction that would land Smith on the Lancers' roster.
William Smith, 19, of Toronto, Ontario, comes to the Lancers with nearly a full season worth of USHL experience, including a Clark Cup Championship (2022).
In the current season, the University of Massachusetts commit has skated in all 17 matchups the Musketeers have had, helping them achieve an 8-6-2-1 record, good for fourth place in the western conference with 19 points. Smith holds two points in the form of two assists on the young season, but was in 2nd place in +/- with a +6 rating.
The 6-foot-1, 193 pound defenseman started the 2021-22 season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League with the Aurora Tigers where he put up an impressive 25 points in 30 games played (8G-17A-25P) with just a mere 12 penalty minutes.
Just past the halfway mark of the regular season, Smith was pulled to the USHL by the Sioux City Musketeers where he played the final 24 games of the regular season, as well as the playoffs as they Musketeers captured the 2022 Clark Cup Championship.
In those last 24 games of the regular season in 2021-22, Smith tallied four assists, then acted as a defensive anchor throughout the duration of the 2022 Clark Cup Playoffs through all 10 games.
William Smith is set to make his debut with the Lancers Saturday, December 3rd, 2022 against the Tri-City Storm.
