Hawks Add Defenseman Broberg

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Marcus Broberg will give the Waterloo blue line a boost, the Black Hawks announced Friday after acquiring the 5-foot, 11-inch, 175-pound defenseman from Sweden.

Broberg opened the 2022/23 slate with the Omaha Lancers. He took the ice 15 times, notching a pair of goals, plus four assists. Broberg's first USHL goal was scored against the Black Hawks on October 22nd during a road game which Waterloo rallied to win, 3-2 in overtime. The left-handed shooting 19-year-old had an assist in each of his first three USHL appearances.

"In our games against Omaha we grew a strong appreciation for Marcus's game, so when it became an option for us to add him for our group, we wanted to make sure we got him," said Hawks General Manager Bryn Chyzyk.

Broberg is the younger brother of Philip Broberg, an Edmonton Oilers prospect who was chosen eighth overall during the 2019 NHL Draft.

Today's acquisition comes not quite a year after Waterloo added another Omaha defenseman midway through the 2021/22 season. Ben Robertson remains with the Hawks this year. Following the January deal, he had two goals and 13 assist in 35 regular season games last winter. So far in 2022/23, Robertson is Waterloo's assist leader with 11 in 17 games, as well as serving as an assistant captain.

Broberg will become the first Swedish player to skate for the Black Hawks since Jacob Bengtsson in 2019/20. Now a junior at Lake Superior State University, Bengtsson produced three goals and 26 assists for Waterloo over two seasons and 109 games.

The Hawks take the ice tonight and tomorrow at home against the Sioux Falls Stampede. Tickets for both games are available by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or online at tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
