Thon's Walk-off Single Beats Cedar Rapids
May 12, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Freddie Thon and Jose Vallejo each posted 4-for-5 nights, including base hits in the bottom of the ninth that lead to a walk-off 8-7 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Vallejo started off the inning with a single to right-center field off Kernels reliever Chris Howell. After two wild pitches got Vallejo to third, Thon delivered a game-winning fly ball single to right-center field to drive Vallejo home.
Vallejo and John Whittleman each notched RBI singles off Kernels starter Robert Mosebach as the LumberKings stormed out to a 4-0 lead. That lead would soon evaporate, as the Kernels would post a six run fifth inning that chased starter Zach Phillips from the game. Cedar Rapids shortstop Hainley Statia plated a pair of runs with a single, and a batter later, right-fielder Jordan Renz knocked home a pair as well to end the night for Phillips. Newly acquired reliever Gerry Oakes allowed an inherited runner to score, but minimized the damage as Cedar Rapids took a 6-4 lead.
The LumberKings posted runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including Thon's fourth home run of the year to keep pace with the Kernels. Trailing 7-6 in the seventh, the L-Kings tied up the game on Kernels reliever Brok Butcher. Thon belted a one-out double to left and then came home a batter later as Whittleman lined an RBI-single to center field.
Phillips (ND) allowed six runs on seven hits through four innings of work, continuing a rough stretch of starts. He walked four batters while striking out four. Juan Carlos Garcia (W, 1-2) picked up the win in relief for the L-Kings, posting two scoreless innings while allowing two hits.
Howell (L, 1-3) took the loss for Cedar Rapids, allowing the Thon single in the ninth.
The LumberKings improve to 11-23 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak. Cedar Rapids falls to 17-18, still fourth in the Midwest League West. The teams continue a four-game series tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, game time set for 6:00 pm. Righthander Tommy Mendoza (1-3, 4.10 ERA) will answer the call for the Kernels, as Jake Rasner (1-3, 3.73 ERA) looks to continue his recent success on the mound for the L-Kings. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or stream the broadcast online at www.lumberkings.com.
