Kane County Cougars News Release
Beloit, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars got 11 strikeouts from starting pitcher Jason Ray, three hits from catcher Anthony Recker and the first professional home run from Justin Sellers to produce an 8-1 win Friday night over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. The Cougars sent 10 men to the plate in their five-run fourth that provided a comfortable lead.
Ray allowed a first-inning run but settled down to shut the door on the Snappers. The right-hander's 11 strikeouts were a season-high for a Cougars pitcher. He allowed only three hits but walked five batters, which prevented him from being able to get through five innings. He worked 4 2/3 frames before giving way to T.J. Franco (1-0), who tossed the next 2 1/3 innings to record the victory.
The Cougars tied the game in the second against Ryan Mullins on Jeff Baisley's solo home run, his team-leading seventh of the season. Baisley then sparked the fourth-inning outburst with a leadoff walk. Jose Pineda singled, and Frank Martinez put Kane County ahead 2-1 with a run-scoring base hit. Recker's one-out single scored Pineda, and Sellers followed with a three-run shot to left for a 6-1 lead. Recker doubled home Wes Long in the eighth, and Mike Massaro poked an RBI single to complete the scoring for the 8-1 win.
John Herrera and Brad Kilby continued the stellar relief after Franco left, and Mullins (1-1) lost for the first time in his professional career. The Cougars (19-15) now move a half game ahead of Peoria for first place in the Western Division, as the Chiefs' game in South Bend was postponed by rain. Kane County and the Snappers (16-17) play game two Saturday night at 6:30 CDT. Jared Lansford (1-1, 2.70) will square off against Eddie Morlan (1-1, 1.25).
