Swing opener in Burlington washed away

May 12, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities were rained out for the second consecutive day Friday, and will make up the game with a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday. After rain caused the series finale in Wisconsin to be cancelled Thursday night, Mother Nature is once again ravaging the Midwest League on Friday.

The twin bill is scheduled to kickoff with first pitch at 5:00 p.m. from Burlington's Community Field, as the teams will get together for a pair of seven-inning contests. Swing LHP Jaime Garcia is expected to pitch the opener against Burlington's RHP Chris Nicoll, while RHP Mark McCormick is slated to take the hill in the nightcap opposite RHP Matt Kniginyzky.

That means that Swing third baseman Randy Roth will have to wait another day to try to extend his Midwest League-best hitting streak to 20 games. His streak of 19 games is currently tied with Kinston Indians outfielder Brian Barton, whose home game in North Carolina is still on schedule to get underway at 6:00 p.m. tonight. Earlier this season, Phillies farmhand John Castellano put together a 21-game hitting streak that spanned stops with Triple-A Louisville (two games) and Low-A Lakewood (11 games) before coming to an end on May 8 with Double-A Reading (eight games). Castellano's streak is the longest this season in the minor leagues.

Quad Cities is 2-2 in doubleheaders this season, having split a pair of daytime twin bills at John O'Donnell Stadium on May 1 and May 2 against the Lansing Lugnuts.

UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will open a four-game series in Burlington with a doubleheader on Saturday. LHP Jaime Garcia (2-2, 2.50) is expected to pitch game one for the Swing against RHP Chris Nicoll (2-2, 2.14), while RHP Mark McCormick (1-1, 2.93) is slated to take the mound against RHP Matt Kniginyzky (2-2, 3.56) in the nightcap. First pitch of the doubleheader will come your way at 5:00 p.m., with coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 beginning at 4:45 p.m.

NEXT HOMESTAND: After a 12-game trip around the Midwest League, the Swing will return to John O'Donnell Stadium on May 20 for an eight-game homestand. Quad Cities will welcome two in-state rivals to town, as the Clinton LumberKings come in on May 20 and the Cedar Rapids Kernels visit starting May 25.
