West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - There's less than a month until the Grand Macker rolls into Fifth Third Ballpark and team registration is getting down to the wire. Next Friday, May 19, is the final day for players to mail in their entry forms and Monday, May 22 is the final day for on-line registration.
"We're really getting excited about this event," said Whitecaps director of outside events Matt Costello. "The Grand Macker is going to be a great event and we want to make sure that no one misses the chance to play in the tournament."
The Grand Macker at Fifth Third Ballpark is scheduled for June 10 and 11 and will serve as the major fundraiser for the Grand Rapids Public Schools athletic department. All the money raised from the three-on-three basketball tournament will be used to avoid a pay-to-play system for Grand Rapids Public School athletes.
Earlier this year, the Gus Macker Tournament was cancelled because the city of Grand Rapids could no longer provide financial support. The event was resurrected in late March when the Whitecaps teamed up with Macker Basketball and Spectrum Health. Other corporations, including Verizon Wireless and Meijer, have also stepped up to offer financial support.
The Gus Macker Tournament is open to anyone, regardless of age or skill level. The tournament will be broken up by age groups, gender and skill level. To register, players can either log on to the Whitecaps website, whitecapsbaseball.com and click on the Macker logo, or pick up a registration form at Fifth Third Ballpark. Registration forms must be postmarked by May 19 and on-line forms need to be completed by May 22.
