Clinton LumberKings News Release

Battle Creek, MI - Clinton LumberKings lefthander Michael Kirkman will officially head to the disabled list with an injury to his left hamstring. Kirkman joins fellow lefthander Broc Coffman on the disabled list for the LumberKings.

Kirkman left in the first inning of Tuesday night's contest with Southwest Michigan after falling to the ground during a pitch that sailed to the backstop. Kirkman had to be helped off the field after facing just two batters and failing to record an out. On the season, Kirkman has posted an 0-3 record with a 6.98 ERA in six starts.

Replacing Kirkman on the 25-man roster for the LumberKings will be veteran right-hander Gerry Oakes. Oakes, 24, joined the team on the road in Southwest Michigan, arriving from extended spring training in Arizona. Oakes was signed as a free-agent by the Texas Rangers last August, but was originally drafted back in 2000 by the Milwaukee Brewers. The right-hander has pitched for two other Midwest League teams over a five-year career, playing in 27 games for the Beloit Snappers in 2002, and 24 games for the Quad City River Bandits in 2003.

Oakes pitched in the Atlanta Braves organization last season, pitching in just six games for three different Braves affiliates. He has not pitched in more than six games since 2003, when he posted a 2-5 record with a 9.45 ERA for the River Bandits.

A new roster will be made available as soon as Oakes selects a jersey number.
