ROYALS PRE-GAME NOTES -
Tonight, the Royals face the Idaho Steelheads for the second consecutive game at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, in what is an early season three-game set between against a Western Conference foe. The third and-and final-matchup of the regular season between the two teams will be here in Boise tomorrow night.
-
Tonight's game will mark the fifth matchup in the respective team histories of the Royals and Steelheads. Three of the prior four games between the two organizations have been played here in Boise, where Reading has compiled a record of 2-1-0. o
In the 2008-09 season, Reading played the Steelheads here in what was then known as Qwest Arena in back-to-back games, falling in the first of the two game set, 3-1, (January 9, 2009) but bouncing back to win the second game, 5-4, with James Reimer in net (January 10, 2009). o
Reading won the only game against Idaho that has been played in Reading. That was in the 2008-09 season, as well-November 6, 2009-with Reading winning by a score of 6-2.
-
Tonight's matchup is also the second game in what is a season-long eight game road trip for the Royals, which will take the team to Loveland, Colorado, Rapid City, South Dakota, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Wheeling, West Virginia. o
This marks only the second time in team history that the Royals have gone for as long as eight consecutive games on the road. In the 2004-05 season, Reading played eight straight away from home ice in cities as
geographically disparate as Toledo, Ohio; Jackson, Mississippi; Lafayette, Louisiana; Beaumont, Texas, and Pensacola, Florida (12/18/04 - 01/04/05). The team had considerable success on that jaunt, running off a record of 6-1-1 in those eight games
-
In the opening game of this three game series with the Steelheads, the Royals came back from a two goal deficit to win by a score of 3-2. o
That game marked the second time in only two road games played so far by the Royals that the team has fallen behind in 2-0 to the opposition only to tie things at two by the end of the second period; and then to get a third period tie-breaking game winner. The other game that fit that same trend was the 4-3 win for the Royals over the Wheeling Nailers on October 20.
-
After falling behind 2-0 on back-to-back second period goals by Idaho on Wednesday, Reading broke through 14:43 into the second period on the second goal of the season by Ryan Penny, who has five points (2g-3a) in four games for the Royals which places him tied for the team lead with Chris McCarthy (2g-3a). Penny, who played plus-1 on Wednesday, leads the Royals in plus-minus at plus-6 (+6) o
Jesper Pettersson registered the primary assist on Penny's goal on Wednesday. That was the first point of the season for Pettersson, who had 20 points (4g-16a) in 43 games with Reading last season. Pettersson is playing plus-5 (+5) through four games with the Royals, which is second best on the team.
-
Defenseman Derik Johnson tied the game at two forty-one seconds after Penny's goal got on the board. For Johnson, that was his first goal of the year. Johnson had one goal in fifty-five games with Reading last season. o
Steven Swavely recorded the primary assist on Johnson's goal. Swavely has had a point in each of the four games that he has played for Reading (2g-2a).
-
Mike Pereira bagged his first goal of the season 4:27 into the third period, which proved to be the third period tie breaking game winner on Wednesday. Pereira led players on Reading's final active roster at the end of last season with 19 goals in forty-seven games with the team. Pereira also led the Royals last season with five game winning goals. o
Three different players have scored the game winner in Reading's wins so far this season: Kris Newbury, Matt Wilkins and Pereira. o
The primary assist on Pereira's goal was registered by Chris McCarthy, who is tied for the team lead with five points (2g-3a) in four games.
-
Martin Ouellette made thirty-two saves to record his second win of the season on Wednesday. Both of Ouellette's wins this year have come on the road. In sixty-two career games with Reading, Ouellette has won thirty-six games which is third all-time in team history to Matt Dalton (42) and Cody Rudkowsky (56).
-
The 26 shots generated by Reading on Wednesday were the fewest that the team has had in a game this season. The seven first period shots tied a season low for shots in a single period.
-
Despite getting touched up for a power play goal on Wednesday, the one PPG bagged by the Steelheads (1-3) is actually the fewest power play goals that Reading has given up in a game this season. The Royals' 65.0% kill ratio (7 PPGAs in 20 chances) is still last in the league.
-
The Royals' power play was held off the board in the one chance that the team had with the man advantage on Wednesday. After going 4 for the first 7 chances on the PP this season, Reading has now gone six straight PP chances without a goal. Nonetheless, the team's 30.8% scoring ratio still leads the league.
