Kalamazoo Wings News Release

KALAMAZOO, MI- In the first of ten meetings during the season, the Kalamazoo Wings and Wheeling Nailers battled in a blue-collar bout that needed a six-round shootout before Wheeling earned a 3-2 victory on Friday at Wings Event Center.

The former divisional rivals set an early tone with physical play, paired with up-and-down action throughout the first period. The Wings were able to steer 18 shots to the goal of Doug Carr, but each effort was fought off by the Nailers netminder. On the other end of the ice, Joel Martin made 11 first-period stops as the teams went to the locker room scoreless.

Opening the scoring in the middle stages of the second period, Wheeling took the lead after Gage Quinney looked to slide a back-door feed through the crease to a teammate in front. His pass was deflected off the stick of a Kalamazoo defender, causing it to roll past Martin.

Four minutes later and working on a power play, Kalamazoo equalized when Tyler Shattock snapped a pass to the stick of Eric Kattelus, who carried to the top of the right circle and wired a shot over the right leg pad of Carr. It was the first power play goal of the season for Kalamazoo, breaking an 0/27 start to the season with the man advantage.

As the third got underway, the Nailers re-established their one-goal lead with a tic-tac-toe passing play that left Nick Sorkin unmarked in the low slot to deposit his first of the year.

Eight minutes later, Kalamazoo earned their eighth power play opportunity of the game following a Brett Stern cross-checking minor. With the extra man power, Kalamazoo were able to generate a series of chances which resulted in a loose puck on the door step for Kattelus to chip in for his second of the game. The equalizer eventually sent the game to overtime.

During the three-on-three extra frame, the goaltenders were again at center stage. Martin made seven overtime stops, while Carr made four critical saves of his own, sending the game to a shootout.

The three-round shootout didn't yield a winner, with Justin Taylor scoring for Kalamazoo in round two and Josh Shalla doing the same for the Nailers. Four rounds later, Ross McMullan's quick wrist shot gave Wheeling a sixth-round shootout victory.
