Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (26-13-3-4, 59 points) defeated the Abbotsford Heat (21-20-4-3, 49 points) 6-1 on Friday night in front of 5,661 fans at Cedar Park Center. Five Stars scored a team-record six goals as the team improved to 14-6-1-2 at home. Stars winger Francis Wathier registered three points, scoring a goal and adding two assists in Texas' first five-goal win this season. Defenseman Garrett Stafford scored twice, and centers Aaron Gagnon and Travis Morin also recorded a goal each. Texas goalie Matt Climie (12-13-3) stopped 36 of 37 Heat shots in the victory. The Texas Stars will host Abbotsford again on Saturday, January 30th at 7:00 PM.
Texas opened the scoring at 9:16 of the first period. Winger Francis Wathier sprung center Travis Morin for a breakaway. Morin fired a shot past Heat goalie David Shantz on the stickside, for an early 1-0 Texas lead. Center Greg Rallo also tallied an assist on Morin's tenth goal of the year. Abbotsford countered at 12:35 when Jason Jaffrey poked in his own rebound, tying the game 1-1. Just 1:19 later, defenseman Garrett Stafford fired a shot and beat Shantz on the gloveside. The defenseman's fourth goal of the season gave Texas a 2-1 lead.
The Stars increased their lead to 3-1 after Garrett Stafford scored his second goal of the night just 1:39 into the middle period. Stafford sent a shot from the right-wing corner and the puck bounced into the net off a Heat defender. At 4:04, center Aaron Gagnon redirected a shot from Ivan Vishnevskiy during a power play for a 4-1 Texas lead. Francis Wathier recorded his second assist of the night on Gagnon's tenth goal of the season.
Texas extended their lead to 5-1 when Francis Wathier tipped in Ivan Vishnevskiy's shot from the blueline during a power play. Wathier's third point of the game came at 7:04 of the third period. Texas right wing Sergei Korostin scored at 12:36 for the 6-1 final score. Gagnon and Trevor Ludwig tallied assists on Korostin's 11th goal this year, sealing the victory over the Abbotsford Heat.
