Pirates top Sound Tigers in shootout

PORTLAND, ME -- Mark Mancari scored the game-tying goal with one second left in regulation and then tallied the only goal in the shootout as the Portland Pirates rallied for a 3-2 shootout victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Scott Munroe made 44 saves for Bridgeport to help the Sound Tigers earn one point and move their record to 22-20-2-5.
The game was tied, 1-1, after two periods. With 5:35 left in the third, Portland's Joe DiPenta was called for hooking. On the ensuing power-play, Mark Flood blasted a shot from the blue-line that beat a screened Jhonas Enroth, giving the Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead with 3:53 remaining in regulation.
With 1:55 to go in regulation, Bridgeport's Jake Gannon received a hooking penalty and, one minute later, Jon Gleed was called for holding. The Pirates pulled their goaltender and had a 6-on-3 skating advantage. The Sound Tigers desperately tried to hold on in the final seconds, but, with one second left on the clock, Mancari fired a shot through Munroe's pads from the top of the face-off circle to tie the game.
Mancari scored the only goal of the shootout in the third round, snapping a shot under Munroe's arm. Enroth stopped all five Bridgeport shooters, including Tyler Haskins to clinch the game for Portland.
The Sound Tigers got on the board first when Greg Moore scored his second shorthanded goal of the year with 6:36 left in the first period. Moore and Sean Bentivoglio raced up the ice on the penalty kill and Bentivoglio fed a pass over to Moore who tapped it into the open side of the net for his 12th goal of the season.
As the Sound Tigers continued their penalty kill, Gleed was called for delay of game, giving the Pirates a two-man advantage. The Pirates got heavy pressure on Munroe during the ensuing power-play. After Munroe stopped shots by Mancari and Tyler Ennis, Brad Larsen finally snapped home the third rebound to tie the game. It was Larsen's sixth goal of the year.
One minute into the second period, Flood hauled down Ennis on a breakaway and Ennis was awarded a penalty shot. The Pirates' sniper moved in and tried to put a shot through Munroe's legs, but the Bridgeport goaltender snapped his pads together and made the save, keeping the game tied.
Portland outshot Bridgeport 47-25 for the game. It was the third 40 save game of the year for Munroe and the sixth by a Bridgeport goaltender. Enroth stopped 23 shots to earn the victory. In a game in which all four regulation goals were scored on special teams, the Sound Tigers were 1-for-3 on the power-play while the Pirates went 2-for-5.
The Sound Tigers and Pirates close out their weekend series Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm. Bridgeport returns home Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm as the Sound Tigers host the Norfolk Admirals on Pink Rink Night at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
