Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose suffered a 5-3 loss to the Worcester Sharks on Friday night to extend their losing streak to six-consecutive games - their longest of the season. Mario Bliznak, Guillaume Desbiens and Brian Salcido all notched goals while Cory Schneider stopped 28 of 32 shots in his fifth straight loss.

The Moose came out soaring - hungry to break their five game losing skid - and started off on the right foot just 53 seconds into the game. With a pretty pass courtesy of Guillaume Desbiens, Mario Bliznak finished off the play when he went high on goaltender Alex Stalock to open the scoring.

Manitoba received the first powerplay of the night when the Sharks were caught with too many men on the ice - a bench minor served by Steven Zalewski. Despite leading the shot clock, 9-7, the Moose couldn't extend their lead during their two-minute advantage.

Taylor Ellington's hooking call returned the favor, giving the Sharks their first man-advantage. But like the Moose, the Sharks failed to find the back of the net with an additional attacker.

Five-on-five hockey paid off for the home team at 13:21. An initial shot from the point fluttered towards Schneider's net and the rebound found Brendan Mashinter's stick. The left-winger backhanded the puck into the right side of the net to knot the game at one.

With 24 seconds left in the first frame, the Moose stole back the lead. Guillaume Desbiens' danced around his defender and topped the puck over Stalock to gain a 2-1 lead and extend his points streak to four consecutive games.

Worcester didn't waste any time, tying the game 1:13 into the second stanza. Frasier McLaren fired the bullet high, to the blocker side of Schneider, putting his club back on even ground 2-2.

Desbiens' was penalized for roughing at 9:10 to give the home team their third powerplay of the night. Jamie McGinn made the man-advantage count when he beat Schneider to regain the lead, 3-2.

By the midway point of the third period the Moose were leading in shots 26-25 but were still down by one goal. At 15:26 the Sharks scored an insurance goal when John McCarthy picked up a loose rebound and went top-shelf on Schneider to lead the game, 4-2.

Right off the next face-off Manitoba connected. Defenceman Brian Salcido beat Stalock on his glove side to inch closer, 4-3. With 2:38 left to go in the third, Desbiens was awarded a penalty shot when the referee deemed he was tripped on a breakaway. Desbiens was denied on his first penalty shot attempt of the season and the Moose held on to their one-goal deficit.

The Moose pulled Cory Schneider in the final minute to opt for an extra attacker but the Sharks potted an empty netter for the second night in a row, this time courtesy of Dwight Helminen, to confirm a 5-3 victory for Worcester.
