KANSAS CITY, Kan.- The Kansas City T-Bones (13-20) lost their fifth straight game to open a three-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (19-15), 7-3, on Friday night in front of 6,112 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The T-Bones took an early lead against Isaac Hess (2-0) on solo homer by Rico Washington in the first inning. Washington added another run with a sacrifice fly to start a two-run third, and Ray Sadler followed with an RBI single to give the T-Bones a 3-0 lead.
Kansas City was held scoreless the rest of the contest, with a ninth-inning single by Prentice Redman being the only hit the T-Bones would collect over the final six frames. Hess went six and one-thirds innings for Winnipeg in the victory, allowing three runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes began their comeback against Kris Johnson (0-1) in the fifth inning, scoring their fist two runs on a home run by Justin Bass. The next batter, Louis Ott, also homered to tie the game at three. The Goldeyes added three in the sixth, scoring the first on an RBI double by Jon Weber. A passed ball and sacrifice fly accounted for the final two runs of the inning.
Johnson departed with one out in the sixth inning and was charged with six runs on five hits in the loss. Steven Stewart finished the sixth and added a scoreless seventh in relief for the T-Bones.
Trent Lare threw the final two innings to finish the game for Kansas City. He allowed the final Goldeyes run on a solo home run to Bass in the ninth, his second of the game.
Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday night as Devin Anderson (2-4, 4.84) takes the mound for Kansas City opposite Luis Villarreal (2-0, 0.71) in a battle of left-handers.
