St. Paul Saints News Release
GARY, IN (June 18, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints may just draw names out of a hat to determine the lineup on Sunday because for the second straight game the offense managed just one run as they lost for the second straight time, just the third time this season that has occurred, 8-1 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Saturday night at U.S. Steel Yard.
The Saints offense had two defining moments. In the first Adam Frost led off by being hit by a pitch, but was then thrown out trying to steal. With two outs, however, they loaded the bases with back-to-back singles from Shane Costa and Ole Sheldon. Jason Cooper then walked to load them up. Brandon Tripp struck out to end the inning.
In the fifth with the Saints down 2-0 they once again loaded the bases, this time with nobody out. Justin Snyder walked, Costa came inches away from homering as he doubled off the top of the right field wall and Sheldon walked to load up the bases. Cooper then drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-1 which chased Railcats starter Carlos Rivas. Tripp, however, would strike out and Richard Mercado grounded into an inning ending double play. The Saints managed just two hits over the final four innings.
The Railcats jumped on Saints starter Donald Brandt in the first as Adam Klein led off with a single and scored on a triple from Mike Massaro to make it 1-0. He would later score on a ground out from Cristian Guerrero to give the Railcats a 2-0 lead.
Brandt settled down and didn't allow a hit in innings two through five and walked just two during that span. In the sixth, however, Massaro started things off with his second triple of the night. With one out Guerrero singled him home to make it 3-0. Guerrero moved to second on a wild pitch and with two outs advanced to third on an infield single from Kyle Haines. Mike Rhode's RBI single to center made it 4-0 and the final run of the inning came when Mike Valadez hit a grounder to short which Frost bobbled and then threw away at first, committing two errors on one play, and allowing Haines to score to make it 5-0.
The Railcats would finish their scoring by getting three runs off of Chad Cordero in the eighth.
The final game of the four game series is Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. at U.S. Steel Yard. The Saints are TBA and the Railcats start RHP Jack Frawley (2-3, 6.14). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
