AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Sox starting pitcher Colin Allen did everything he needed to do, scattering seven hits and only one run in seven innings pitched as the Sox defeated the Wichita Wingnuts 6-4 on Saturday night in front of 3,446 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Allen (1-3) got his first win in his seventh starts. He previously allowed at least five runs in each of his six previous starts. Wingnuts starter Ryan Hinson (4-3) got the loss, allowing five runs off nine hits in six innings. Sox closer Gary Perinar earned his fourth save in his fourth opportunity, striking out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth.
The Sox took an early lead in the first as Fehlandt Lentini walked, stole second, went to third on an Adam De La Garza groundout and scored on a Cyle Hankerd groundout for a 1-0 lead.
The Wingnuts evened the game in the third as Mike Conroy singled, went to second on a Jose Duran single and scored on a Josh Horn RBI single to tie the game 1-1.
Amarillo responded in the bottom of the third inning as Hankerd singled and went to second on an error. Van Pope followed with an RBI double to score Hankerd, while Chris Nash singled to score Pope. Following a wild pitch to send pinch runner Kevin Butler to second, Benji Johnson doubled to score Butler for a 4-1 Sox advantage.
The Sox added a run in the sixth as Tim Alberts doubled and scored on an error, while Hankerd sent a solo homerun over the left field fence to lead off the seventh inning for a five-run lead.
Wichita added a run in the eighth off a Brent Clevlen double and an error for a four-run Amarillo lead. The Wingnuts added two unearned runs in the ninth inning, but Perinar struck out three batters to end the game with the Sox victorious 6-4.
With the win, the Sox improve to 16-18 while the Wingnuts fall to 20-15.
