Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - In spite of another excellent outing by the pitching staff, it was the offense of the Gary SouthShore RailCats that stole the show Saturday night in front of 4,936 happy fans who were on hand to witness an 8-1 victory over the St. Paul Saints.

The RailCats took control of a tight game as the offense hung a three-spot on the U. S. Steel Yard scoreboard in both the sixth and the eighth. Mike Massaro accounted for three of the eleven for the ‘Cats who made the most of the opportunities while the RailCats hurlers stranded 13 Saints runners on base. Adam Klein and Kyle Haines each added a pair of singles on the night. The win moves the RailCats to within a game and a half of the Wichita Wingnuts for first place in the Central Division of the American Association of Independent Baseball.

The turning point of the contest came in the fifth when the Saints chased RailCats starter Carlos Rivas after the lefty loaded the bases with nobody out and walked in a run. Brian Grening got the call from manager Greg Tagert and was able to get out of the jam without surrendering another run to preserve the RailCats 2-1 lead. The Cal Poly product struck out Brandon Tripp and induced the inning-ending double play off the bat of Richard Mercado. Grening earned the win after his 2.2 shutout innings and had three strikeouts.

Rivas' high pitch count forced an early exit but the southpaw gave his team a chance to win allowing just one run while scattering six hits and five walks. And for the second night in a row, the combination of Jeremy Hauer, Will Krout and Travis Minix shut down the Saints. Hauer has still not allowed a run since May 19 after another 0.2 hitless innings Saturday, Krout continued to dominate opposing hitters allowing just one hit in his 0.2 scoreless innings and Minix added a trio of strikeouts in the ninth to close out the win for the RailCats.

Another early lead for the ‘Cats led to another victory as the home team plated two in the first. Designated Hitter Adam Klein led off the frame with a single and scored on a triple to right-center for the game's first run. Massaro crossed the plate on a Cristian Guerrero RBI groundout to push the advantage to two after one.

Massaro collected his second triple of the night in the sixth to start the first three-run rally and scored on a Guerrero single up the middle. After a Haines single moved Guerrero to third, Mike Rohde smacked a line-drive base hit up the middle to drive in Guerrero. Haines came around to score a batter later when Mike Valadez reached on an error by the St. Paul shortstop.

A Lorenzo Scott walk and a Kyle Haines single put runners on first and second for the ‘Cats against Chad Cordero in the eighth and consecutive RBI singles by Chris Carrara, Klein and Massaro provided the final margin of victory
