Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants could not solve Alex Caldera and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night, losing a 3-0 shutout. The Pheasants won the first two games of the four-game series in Fargo, and they lead the series two games to one.
Fargo-Moorhead rode the arm of Caldera (4-0) for seven innings. Caldera scattered six hits while walking two and striking out four. Casey Hoorelbeke earned his second save of the year by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth.
Fargo-Moorhead took a 1-0 lead in the third on Nic Jackson's sacrifice fly. They added two in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Mike Coles and Jackson's run-scoring single. Jackson was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Four other RedHawks had two hits apiece.
The Pheasants' best opportunity to score came in the second inning. Mark Shorey led off with a single. Brandon Sing followed with an infield hit, but Shorey was thrown out trying to reach third off on a poor throw from RedHawks shortstop Zach Penprase. Reggie Abercrombie then singled to center to put two runners on with one out, but Francisco Leandro flew out and Trevor Lawhorn grounded out to end the inning.
With insufficient run support, Brandon Rapoza (1-4) took the loss. He allowed all three runs on seven hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out one.
Abercrombie and Sing each went 2-for-4. Sing had a double, the only extra-base hit of the night for the Pheasants.
Sioux Falls' record fell to 14-21. They are 3-3 on the current road trip.
The Pheasants can clinch the series in the finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, in Fargo. Two of the best starters in the league will face each other: Sioux Falls RHP Ben Moore (4-1, 1.81) vs. Fargo-Moorhead LHP Jake Laber (4-1, 1.33). The game will be televised live on Midco Sports Net. It will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and online at www.kwsn.com.
