Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out to an early lead and rode solid pitching en route to a 2-1 victory over the St. Paul Saints in front of a raucous 4,611 fans at U. S. Steel Yard Friday evening.
U. S. Steel Yard lived up to its reputation as a pitcher's park Friday with the home team getting an outstanding performance by a combination of four pitchers led by starter Scott Shaw. Shaw held the Saints in check evening his record to 3-3 on the season. Over his 6.2 innings of work, the University of Illinois product scattered four hits allowing just one run and adding five strikeouts. The one blemish on Shaw's impressive stat line came on a solo homer by St. Paul outfielder Brandon Tripp.
The RailCats bullpen bounced back to preserve the win for Shaw. LHP Jeremy Hauer threw one pitch in the seventh to record a groundball out while sidewinding righty Will Krout lowered his team best ERA to 1.13 after a scoreless eighth. South Central High School alum Travis Minix earned his first save at U. S. Steel Yard and second since joining the RailCats via trade adding a pair of strikeouts to the effort.
Single runs in the first and second inning were all the offense the 'Cats would need on this night. Left fielder Adam Klein led off the game with a double down the left field line. The RailCats proceeded to load the base with nobody out following a Mike Massaro walk and a Brad Boyer single but managed to score just the one run off Saints starter Matt Long (4-2) when Lorenzo Scott's sacrifice fly drove in Klein from third. The 'Cats went ahead by two when Mike Rohde scored on a Klein single to center.
The same two teams meet Saturday at 7:10 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard as the RailCats send LHP Carlos Rivas (0-0, 3.60) to the mound and the Saints counter with LHP Donald Brandt (3-1, 3.89). The first 1,000 fans pick up a sweet RailCats skateboard. For more information on all the fun happening at U. S. Steel Yard this summer and to purchase your tickets now call the 'Cats at 219.882.2255 or visit www.railcatsbaseball.com.
