
T-Bones Drop Home Opener, 6-5

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Kansas City T-Bones (3-2) fell to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (3-2), 6-5, Tuesday night in front of 5,134 fans in their home opener at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Rico Washington homered off Scott Shaw (1-0) to give Kansas City a 1-0 advantage. The RailCats answered with two runs off Mike Rocco (0-1) in the top of the fourth on a double by Mike Rohde to pull ahead, 2-1. Kansas City answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Brian Joynt to even the score at two.
The T-Bones took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple by Ray Sadler. Shaw left after six innings having allowed three runs on eight hits in the victory.
Gary pulled ahead for the final time in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits to chase Rocco from the game. Rocco left after surrendering consecutive RBI doubles with one out, giving way to left-hander Rusty Jones. Jones walked the only batter he faced before turning the ball over to Steven Stewart. Stewart surrendered a two-run single to Jeff Beachum two batters later to cap off the RailCats scoring.
Rocco allowed five runs on eight hits over six and one-thirds innings in the loss.
Jimmy Mojica drove in the final two runs of the game with a home run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the score to 6-5. David Nathanson finished the game for Gary, throwing a perfect ninth for his third save of the season.
The two teams prepare for game two of their three-game series Wednesday night as Kansas City sends right-hander Ryne Reynoso (1-0, 3.60) to face right-hander Jack Frawley (0-0, 1.80) and the RailCats.
