Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants were edged by the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night in a 2-1 nailbiter at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Ben Moore pitched masterfully as the Pheasants starter. He began the game by striking out the side and ran his strikeout total to eight by evening's end. He allowed only one run and one walk on six hits. Moore has struck out 15 batters combined in his first two starts while only allowing one run.
Winnipeg took the 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth with Jonathan Wyatt's run-scoring hit, a ground-rule double that hopped the right field fence. The Pheasants answered with Brandon Sing's solo home run in the bottom half, a monster shot over the left field wall. Sing has three home runs on the year.
The game was knotted at 1-1 until the top of the ninth when Luis Alen doubled home Brian Myrow for the difference maker. Pheasants reliever Aaron Cotter (0-1) gave up the winning run for the loss. Alen finished 3-for-4 to lead a Goldeyes offense that had just seven hits.
Reliever Aaron Hartsock picked up the save for the Goldeyes. The Pheasants' bats went quiet after the sixth. The Winnipeg bullpen was perfect in the last three innings.
Winnipeg starter Issac Hess was solid but did not factor in the decision. He shut out the Pheasants in five innings pitched, walked two and struck out five.
The Pheasants dropped their fifth game in a row to start the young season at 1-5.
The four-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18. Probable starters are Winnipeg RHP Dustin Glant (0-1, 9.00) vs. Sioux Falls LHP Chris Salberg (0-1, 1.29). It's Ladies Night where ladies of all ages can purchase any grandstand ticket for just $5.
Notes: Mark Shorey returned to the Pheasants lineup and went 2-for-4...Of the seven Winnipeg hits, six went to right field...Joe Anthonsen played shortstop for the second straight game...All of Sing's home runs have been solo...Moore threw 118 pitches, 81 for strikes.
