Ex-Rockie Smith Shuts Down Saltdogs

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Former big leaguer Greg Smith was masterful for Grand Prairie, tossing a five-hit shutout as the Airhogs blanked the Lincoln Saltdogs 4-0 in front of 1,344 fans at QuikTrip Park Tuesday afternoon.

Smith (1-0), who appeared in MLB most recently as a starting pitcher for the Colorado Rockies in 2010, faced just two batters over the minimum while striking out nine to notch his first victory of the season.

Lincoln was unable to advance a runner past first base the final eight innings.

Tim Brown matched Smith zero for zero over the first five innings, but the Airhogs broke through with all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run triple from David Thomas.

Brown (0-1) lasted 5 1/3 frames, allowing four runs on nine hits while walking one to take the loss.

Tommy Palica threw the final 2 2/3 innings for the Saltdogs, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking four.

Blake Gailen went 2-for-4 to up his average on the season to .423.

The Saltdogs drop to 2-4 on the season. Grand Prairie improves to 4-2.

The teams meet Wednesday morning at 10:35 for the finale of the three-game series as Lincoln looks to avoid the sweep. Alex Maestri (0-1, 20.23) is slated to pitch for the Saltdogs against Scot Drucker (0-0, 2.25) for the Airhogs. Radio coverage begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sportsradio 1480 KLMS.
