
Wingnuts Add Experienced Starter

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts signed right-handed pitcher Jonathan Ellis on Tuesday.
Ellis is in his eighth season of professional baseball and owns a lifetime record of 31-26 with a 3.90 ERA in 395.0 innings of work. Ellis pitched in the Atlantic League last season, splitting time with Somerset and Camden. The 28-year old righty was a combined 4-3 with a 5.05 ERA in 24 games, 10 as a starter, and struck out 51 in 62.1 IP.
A native of Charleston, SC, Ellis was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the sixth round in 2004 out of The Citadel. Ellis spent six years in the Padres' organization, four of which were spent at the Double-A and Triple-A levels. Mostly a reliever throughout his professional career, Ellis is expected to join the Wingnuts' rotation. Ellis was a starter during his college days at The Citadel, which included a 12-2 mark in his junior season in 2004. The 6-foot, 205-pound Ellis struck out 131 in 136.1 IP that spring with a 2.18 ERA.
Ellis is scheduled to take the ball on Wednesday morning in the Wingnuts' series finale at Fort Worth.
The Wingnuts recently placed Dan Grybash on the Inactive List after the right-hander left his start last Friday in the bottom of the first inning. American Association players must remain on the Inactive List for at least 30 days.
