Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes got a clutch RBI double from catcher Luis Alen in the top of the ninth inning and another great performance from starting pitcher Isaac Hess, as the Fish edged the Sioux Falls Pheasants 2-1 before 1,111 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium Tuesday night.

"I am feeling pretty good at the plate right now," said Alen, who went 3-for-4 in the game and now has four RBI and five hits in his last two games. "I was looking for a good pitch to hit and I got it."

The win is Winnipeg's fourth in a row and puts the Goldeyes in a position to win the four-game series tomorrow night.

"It takes a lot of skill to win a game like this and bridge the bullpen to get to our closer," Goldeyes pitching coach Brendan Sagara said on Sports Radio 1290's post-game show. "This will be a game that we will look back on in August as a game we have to win to put ourselves in a playoff position."

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the tight game in the sixth inning when Justin Bass doubled to lead off the inning and then scored two batters later on a Jonathan Wyatt double. For Bass, he now has four extra-base hits in six games and has opened the season on a six-game hitting streak.

Sioux Falls quick responded, though. In the bottom of the sixth, slugger Brandon Sing took a Chad Benefield pitch yard to tie the game 1-1.

Both starting pitchers turned in stellar performances and it's a little unfair that neither was credited for the win. Hess worked five scoreless innings, striking out five and giving up just four hits. In the other dugout, Ben Moore turned in eight innings for Sioux Falls, only giving up the run in the sixth inning and striking out eight.

Ian Thomas, who threw two scoreless innings, picks up his second win the season, while Aaron Cotter takes the loss for Sioux Falls. Aaron Hartsock came into the game for Winnipeg in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

The Goldeyes continue this four-game series with the third game tomorrow night in Sioux Falls. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the action can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m.
