Syracuse Falls Victim to Hot Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Hitters in 7-0 Mets Loss on Thursday Night

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets ran into a buzzsaw on Thursday night, as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders scored early and often on their way to a 7-0 win at NBT Bank Stadium. The week-long, six-game series is now knotted up at a game apiece. The RailRiders scored in four consecutive innings at one point on their way to the Thursday night victory.

For the second straight day, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (1-1) raced out to a big lead early in the ballgame. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning in Wednesday night's game, the RailRiders did even better in Thursday night's game. The RailRiders jumped all over Tylor Megill, tagging the Mets starter for five runs allowed on six hits in four and two-thirds innings of work.

After Megill retired the first eight batters he faced in order and worked three scoreless innings to start the game, the wheels began to come off in the fourth inning. After Oswald Peraza struck out to start the inning, Ben Rortvedt walked to put a runner on base with one out. Andrés Chapparo then popped out to put Megill just an out away from escaping the inning without a scratch, but it wasn't to be. Elijah Dunham doubled to extend the inning, followed by consecutive walks to Carlos Narvaez and Jamie Westbrook to plate one run and keep the bases loaded with two outs. The next batter, Jesús Bastidas, slapped a two-run single into right field to score two more runs and make it a 3-0 game.

In the fifth, the RailRiders scored another pair of runs to make it a 5-0 game and close the line on Megill in his first Triple-A start of the season. After an Estevan Florial single to start the inning, the next two batters were retired in order to once again to give Megill the hope of escaping the inning without damage. Once again, it wasn't to be. Andrés Chapparo doubled home Florial to make it a 4-0, followed by an RBI single from Elijah Dunham to make it 5-0. Each of the five runs that Tylor Megill allowed in his outing came with two outs.

In the sixth and seventh innings, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wrapped up their scoring with a pair of solo home runs. Brandon Lockridge smacked a solo shot in the sixth, followed by a big fly from Elijah Dunham in the seventh. Lockridge finished the night 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, a home run, a walk, and a run scored. Dunham finished the night 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and two runs driven in.

While the RailRiders were buzzing at the plate, their pitching staff was keeping Syracuse (1-1) silent at the dish all evening long. It started with an excellent outing from Will Warren, who tossed five scoreless innings with five strikeouts in his start. Warren, a 24-year-old right-hander out of Southeastern Louisiana, is widely considered one of the best pitching prospects in the Yankees' minor-league system. Warren used an excellent slider to befuddle Mets batters all evening long.

From there, it was the bullpen's job to keep befuddling Mets batters. They did just that, as four different relievers (Aaron McGarity, Michael Felix, Matt Krook, and Matt Bowman) worked the final four frames in scoreless fashion to clinch the shutout win for the RailRiders. It marked the first time Syracuse had been shut out as an offense since a May 17th game at the Norfolk Tides.

Syracuse is home all this week after spending the prior two weeks on the road. The Mets continue a six-game series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Friday evening. The third game of the series is slated for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Left-hander Joey Lucchesi is slated to start for the Mets against right-hander Clayton Beeter for the RailRiders.
