Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Brock Peterson was 5-for-6 and drove in three runs to lead Quad Cities' 17-hit assault and the Swing clobbered the Kernels, 11-0, Friday night in a Midwest League baseball game played before a crowd of 3,573 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Peterson tied the stadium record of five hits set by former Kernels Erick Aybar on Aug. 28, 2003, against Lansing.

Peterson is 7-for-9 with five RBI the last two nights against Kernels pitching.

Peterson had a chance for a Midwest League record-tying sixth hit, but was struck out by the Kernels' Carlos Morban in the ninth inning.

Quad Cities (1-1 second half, 34-34 overall) scored eight runs over the first three innings and snapped a five-game winning streak for the Kernels (1-1, 43-28). The Kernels were held to five hits.

The Swing rocked Kernels starter Michel Simard (6-4), pounding seven hits and scoring six runs off him in 1.2 innings. It was the most runs Simard has allowed in a game and the shortest outing by a Kernels starting pitcher this season. Simard's ERA shot up from 3.13 to 3.63.

Peterson had RBI singles in the first and second innings and a run-scoring double in the fifth inning. Teammate J.R. Taylor had a pair of two-run doubles.

Brandon Wood was 2-for-4 for the Kernels, who were shutout for only the second time this season.

Quad Cities starter Chris Schutt (3-5) limited the Kernels to two hits over six innings.

Morban was the only one of four Kernels pitchers not to allow a run. He pitched two innings, gave up one hit and struck out four.

NIBLETS – The Kernels host Quad Cities for two more games before the series switches to Davenport's John O'Donnell Stadium for four games. Game times are Saturday 7 p.m., Sunday 2 p.m. ... Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600 AM with John Rodgers.
