Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Burlington Bees (1-1, 23-49) trailing 5-1, Mitch Maier hit a laser to right field that just missed leaving the park for a game-tying grand slam, leaving him with a three-run double to pull the Bees within one. The Bees would get no closer as Eulogio DeLaCruz finished the game with a strikeout and a popout to preserve the West Michigan Whitecap's (1-1, 30-41) 5-4 win at Community Field tonight. The series is now tied at one.

The Whitecaps jumped out early on Bees' starter Chris Coughlin (1-1). Vince Blue led off with a single, stole second, went to third when Adam Donachie's throw sailed into center, and scored on a single by Juan Francia. Luis Sabino followed with a two-run homer that bounced off the top of the wall in right before leaving the ballpark to make it 3-0. The Bees got one run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Kenard Springer. The Whitecaps scored two more in the third on a walk, an error, an RBI groundout, and a sacrifice fly.

Couglin left after four innings. Alexis Encarnacion pitched three perfect innings in relief and struck out three. RH Ira Brown struck out two in a scoreless frame. Dusty Dossett walked three in the ninth, but struck out two and left the bases loaded.

Whitecaps' starter Brian Rogers (2-3) allowed one run on two hits in five innings for the win although he walked two batters. Brian Santo, Anthony Tomey, and Daniel Zell each pitched a scoreless inning before DeLaCruz took over for the ninth. DeLaCruz walked Bryan Graham, Jeff Barry, and Angel Sanchez to set-up the double by Maier. Last Thursday, the Bees scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning at West Michigan in a 13-9 comeback win.

The Bees and Whitecaps continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Ambiorix Burgos (1-7, 6.10) will start for the Bees against RH Andy Baldwin (8-4, 2.76) for the Whitecaps. The gates will open at 5:00 so fans can sign-up to be part of the Century 21 Home Run Derby Contest starting at 5:45. Century 21 will have giveaway items for the fans on their way in as well. Tomorrow night is also Family Night with a bike giveaway from Louisa Communications and JD Byrider.
