Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities scored twice in the first inning and never looked back on Friday night as they defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 11-0, at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Brock Peterson led the charge for the Swing with five hits and three runs batted in on the night, while JR Taylor knocked home four runs and scored four more of his own.

Despite all the offense, starting pitcher Chris Schutt was the biggest story for the Swing, working six scoreless innings to pick up his third win of the season. Schutt allowed only two singles in his six scoreless frames, retiring 12 men in a row at one point. He struck out five and walked only one while improving to 3-5. Over his last seven outings, Schutt has gone 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA, including 31 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Quad Cities jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning, using four singles to score two runs. Justin Arneson and Kyle Phillips each scored a run, while Peterson and Mark Zamojc each drove a baserunner home.

The Swing added four more runs in the second frame, as Kyle Geiger started with an infield single and Paul Rutgers reached on an error. Taylor roped a two-run double down the right field line, increasing the Swing's lead to 4-0. Peterson's single into center brought home Taylor, and a sacrifice fly from Omar Burgos scored Arneson to cap the rally.

Quad Cities scored twice more in the third frame, as Peterson knocked home Rutgers, and Burgos had another sacrifice fly to plate Taylor.

The Swing added a single run in the fifth inning, as Peterson had a two-out double to knock in Taylor. Taylor did more damage in the sixth frame, as his two-out, two-run double scored Scott Whitrock and Zamojc for an 11-0 lead.

Peter Tautor struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning, and has not allowed a run in seven straight outings. Kevin Culpepper worked a scoreless eighth frame, and TJ Prunty closed it out, striking out the side in the ninth as the Swing registered their seventh shutout of the season.
