Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - The second-annual Century 21/Burlington Bees Home Run Derby will be tomorrow before the Bees' game against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 at Community Field. The gates will open at 5:00, an hour earlier than usual, so fans can come in and sign up to be matched up with one of the six Bees players competing in the event which will begin at approximately 5:45. Century 21 will also have giveaway items for fans when coming into the ballpark.
The rules are similar to the Major League Home Run Derby held as part of the All-Star Game festivities. Fans will be randomly selected to be partnered with one of the players competing in the event. Each of the six finalists will receive a Century 21 prize package. The person that gets paired with the winner of the derby will receive two tickets to see the Bees parent club, the Kansas City Royals play at Kauffman Stadium later this summer and $100 cash from Century 21.
The Bees that will be competing this year are: All-Star Game MVP Mitch Maier, All-Star Chris Lubanski, 1B Kila Kaaihue, LF Kenard Springer, C Luis Gonzalez, and 1B Chamar McDonald. Each will get eight outs to see how many home runs they can hit (An out is recorded every time the player hits the ball and it doesn't leave the ballpark). The top two hitters in the first round will get 10 more swings to determine the winner. Last year, Matt Tupman was the winner in the first-ever Century 21 Home Run Derby at Community Field.
