Lansing Lugnuts News Release

After battling through a pair of rain delays, the umpires at Fifth Third Field decided enough was enough and suspended the Lugnuts game with the Dayton Dragons in a 7-7 tie in the top of the seventh inning. The game will continue tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. and then the regularly scheduled game will follow with lefty Justin Jones pitching for the Lugnuts.

The Lugnuts jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Robinson Chirinos cracked an RBI double, Kevin Collins launched his 20th homer of the season and Drew Larsen added a sacfly. Enter the top of the 5th and the first of the two rain delays. After a 46-minute hiatus, Justin Gillman, the third pitcher for the Dragons, induced Jake Fox to ground out to end the frame. Reid Willett took over on the mound for Lansing starter Robert Ransom in the bottom of the inning, and like the weather around the park had a rough evening. He allowed seven runs in just a third of an inning. After fanning Habelito Hernandez to start the inning, he appeared to have struck out Jarrod Schmidt, but a wild pitch on the third strike allowed Schmidt to reach and then came the base hits. Miguel Perez singled, Elvin Beltre tripled in two runs, Chris Dickerson doubled in a run and Luis Bolivar tied the game with a double. After Joey Votto walked and Bolivar took third on a passed ball, Walter Olmstead doubled in two runs and Ben Himes doubled in Olmstead to chase Willett. Ryan Kalita relieved the righty and got back-to-back grounders to end the frame.

In the top of the seventh, Brian Dopirak singled with one out and Kevin Collins followed with his third hit of the night. Carlos Mejia then singled in Dopirak and after Jake Fox was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Alan Rick singled in a pair to tie the game. Then the skies opened up again with the second rain delay proving too much.
