SWB Game Notes

August 28, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rochester Red Wings pushed across a run in the top of the 11th inning and held on to defeat the RailRiders 5-4. The Red Wings have won three straight against the RailRiders and lead the season series 8-7.

WIN & YOU'RE IN: SWB's magic number to secure a playoff spot sits at two. It would clinch post-season play at PNC Field by besting Rochester tonight. The magic number to win the division is five.

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: The RailRiders' 23 shutout wins pace the minors and continue to redefine the single-season franchise record. The 2009 SWB Yankees previously held the franchise record with 16 blankings.

FTW!: The RailRiders' 83 wins make for SWB's highest total since the 2012 vagabond then-SWB Yankees took the IL North with 84. Even with a cancelled contest that lessened the RailRiders' 2016 schedule to 143 games, the team is on pace to win 89 games. No IL club has won 90+ games since the then-SWB Red Barons won a franchise-record 91 affairs in 2002. The RailRiders boast Triple-A's best record and stand tied with Double-A Reading for the most wins in baseball.

ALL IN: Elsewhere on the farm, both Low-A Charleston and Advanced-A Tampa had secured postseason berths in the South Atlantic League and Florida State League respectively. Double-A Trenton joined the bunch with a thrilling 15-inning victory at Portland (Boston Red Sox), 4-2. With the game tied 2-2 into the 15th inning the Thunder scored twice in the top half of the inning on RBI singles from Miguel Andujar and Billy McKinney. That gave the Thunder enough of a lead that in the bottom of the 15th inning, the first two men reached against J.P. Feyereisen but he recorded his third scoreless inning and slammed the door. Trenton makes the postseason for the 11th time in the 23-year history of the franchise and the eighth time in the 14-year affiliation with the New York Yankees. Trenton could still take the Eastern Division. It sits just 1.5 games back of first-place Reading. The Thunder and R-Phils face each other over their final four regular-season games Sept. 2-5. The Short Season-A Staten Island Yankees own the NY-Penn League's wild-card chase by 2.5 games with a magic number of seven.

SOL MAN: Donovan Solano delivered a pinch-hit single in the 11th as the RailRiders attempted to rally. He has multiple hits in eight of his last 12 games played. He fell a triple shy of the cycle when this home-and-home began on Friday night. He ranks among the IL's best in batting average (5th, .313) and hits (1st, 150). In 25 games played this month, he has slashed .409/.423/.581/1.003 with 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored. His 62 RBIs on the season trail only Aaron Judge (65) for the team lead.

R&R: Rob Refsnyder went 0-for-4 with a walk. In 14 games played since his return from the bigs, he has gone 21-for-51 (.412) with six RBIs and six walks for a .467 OBP. He has hit safely 31 of his last 34 Triple-A games, slashing .388/.430/.504/.933 with nine doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs and 18 runs scored in that time. The run has shot his average up from .190 to .326.

CLASSICAL GAS: Mason Williams doubled and drove in a run. Since he was activated off the SWB disabled list on Aug. 13, he has slashed .341/.375/.432/.807, going 15-for-44 with seven RBIs, three walks and nine runs scored in 11 games.

GREAT CESAR'S GHOST: Cesar Puello went 3-for-4 including a bunt single on Friday. In 13 games played this month he has slashed .375/.394/.656/1.050 with a pair of homers. His 18 stolen bases rank second on the team and have him just outside of the IL's top five in just 72 games played.

LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel singled and scored as the leadoff man He has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games. The All-Star ranks among the IL's best in average (6th, .309), hits (2nd, 147), steals (5th, 19) and runs scored (1st, 77).

OFF THE RAILS: The paid attendance of 10,000 made for the team's seventh sellout of the season and 20th fixed-seat (7,115) sellout...Both Gamel and Solano have a chance to become the second SWB player in the Yankees era to lead the IL in hits...Jose Pirela (163) accomplished the feat in 2014...At 11 innings, last night tied as the RailRiders' longest game by innings this season, matching a 2-0 win over Syracuse from April 14.
