Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Donn Roach had been lights in his first three starts in a Mud Hens uniform, going 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA. However, Roach struggled to find the strike zone on a consistent basis Sunday night, which led to a 5.1 inning outing, which featured the righty surrendering nine hits and six runs while striking out four and walking two. Roach picked up his first loss for Toledo and saw his ERA rise to 3.09. Frank Duncan has also been on a roll as of late for the Indians, coming into Sunday's game donning a 1.94 ERA to go with nine wins. The big right hander also seemed to struggle with control and lasted just four innings allowing five hits and two runs while striking out six and walking three. Earning the win for the Indians was Jorge Rondon, his sixth of the season, by pitching two innings and allowing just two hits.
The Indianapolis Indians got things started early at Fifth Third Field Sunday night, as Alen Hanson notched a leadoff double to left and eventually came around to score on a passed ball to go up 1-0. However, the Mud Hens had a quick response, as a Steven Moya RBI double to left plated Jeff McVaney and a Dean Green RBI single to right scored Moya to put Toledo up 2-1 after one inning of baseball.
The Indians put a two spot of their own on the board in the second inning to go right back on top 3-2 thanks to Will Garcia and Dan Gamache RBI hits.
Indianapolis manufactured two more runs in the fifth inning courtesy of an Austin Meadows sacrifice fly and a Jose Osuna RBI groundout to extend their lead to 5-2, and a Garcia fielder's choice in the sixth inning pushed the Indians' lead to 6-2.
Making appearances out of the Hen pen were Dustin Molleken, Matt Crouse, Blaine Hardy, and Angel Nesbitt, who combined to allow only one hit and no runs while striking out five batters.
Toledo heads off to Indianapolis for a three game set starting tomorrow night, as the first pitch is set for 7:05 PM at Victory Field. The matchup pits Toledo's RHP Warwick Saupold (6-2, 2.47 ERA) against former Tiger and Hen, LHP Kyle Lobstein (1-2, 3.69 ERA).
Toledo Tidbits:
Something about Sundays- With Sunday's loss, Toledo dropped to 7-15 on the season during Sunday games, their second worst day of the week in regards to records (the Mud Hens are 5-12). At home on Sundays, the Hens are now 4-8 and 3-7 on the road. Also, Toledo dropped to 33-37 at Fifth Third Field this season, meaning the Mud Hens will finish below .500 at the Hen House.
Mud Hens Moving All Around- The Toledo Mud Hens' 2016 squad has seen a lot of movement throughout their roster. The Hens' opening day starting lineup featured just three Hens that played in Sunday's game: Dixon Machado, Steven Moya, and Jordany Valdespin (who was playing first). In total, the Mud Hens, under the command of the Detroit Tigers have made 161 transactions during the season due in part to the overwhelming number of Tigers injuries. Also, the Mud Hens have seen a total of 67 different faces participate in a game during the 2016 season; some of the players include Tigers rehabbers, such as James McCann, Jose Iglesias, JD Martinez, Jordan Zimmermann, Cameron Maybin, and Shane Greene. Michael Fulmer, an AL Cy Young and Rookie of the Year candidate, was on the Hens' roster until being called up April 29th. Other faces that have come and gone for Toledo include veteran catcher Humberto Quintero, the veteran infielder Alberto Gonzalez, the Tigers' opening day center fielder Anthony Gose, and the talented southpaw starters Matt Boyd and Daniel Norris.
Headed for the Home Stretch- The 2016 version of the Toledo Mud Hens has just eight games remaining. Toledo heads on the road for three games at Indianapolis before heading to Columbus to play three games against the IL West champions. The Mud Hens return home to Fifth Third Field on Sunday September 4th for a 6:05 PM game, which will feature fireworks, and then Toledo will play their final game of the season on Labor Day at 1:05 PM, which will also feature a picnic and pregame concert at Hensville Park.
