Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk pounded out 12 hits and used an eight-run first inning to cruise to a 9-5 win over the Charlotte Knights in front of 13,902 fans Saturday night at Harbor Park.
The Tides sent 13 men to the plate against Chris Volstad (8-11) in the first frame, collecting nine hits and a walk in the inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead. At one point 10 consecutive Tides batters reached base safely, helping Norfolk score eight runs in an inning for the first time since an 11-run outburst vs. Louisville on May 13, 2014.
Eight of Norfolk's nine hits in the first inning were singles, with Mike Yastrzemski's two-run double being the lone extra-base hit of the frame.
Corban Joseph had three hits to pace Norfolk's offense, including an RBI single in the first inning and a solo homer in the fourth. His brother, Caleb, added two hits, two RBI and a walk in the win, as he's now batted .320 (8-25) with four RBI in five games since being optioned from Baltimore.
Jayson Aquino (2-0) earned the win in relief of David Hale, as he struck out five over 3.1 shutout innings of relief. Aquino allowed two hits and did not walk a batter as he earned his second career victory at the Triple-A level.
With the win, Norfolk pulled to within 2.5 games of first place Gwinnett and 2.0 games of Charlotte in the IL South division. The Tides have one more home contest on the 2016 slate before wrapping up their regular season with an eight-game road swing through Gwinnett, Charlotte and Durham.
The Tides conclude their 2016 home schedule Sunday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 6:05. Odrisamer Despaigne (1-7, 3.30) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Carson Fulmer (0-1, 12.50).
On Sunday, fans can take pictures on the concourse with Chase, Marshall and Sky from the popular television show Paw Patrol. After the game will be a postgame fireworks extravaganza, presented by Wawa. Plus, several lucky fans will win tickets to see Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean or Brad Paisley at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater.
