Five-Run Fourth Paces Syracuse Past PawSox, 7-2

Syracuse, NY - A five-run bottom of the fourth inning that featured back-to-back homers guided the Syracuse Chiefs past the Pawtucket Red Sox, 7-2, on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium Despite Pawtucket's 69-64 record, the loss eliminated the club from postseason contention. Dan Butler went 4-for-4 in the defeat to improve his batting average to .352 in 34 games since June. PawSox lefthander Brian Johnson (5-6) faced off with Syracuse righthander Mat Latos (1-0) in a rematch of Monday's starting pitching matchup. The two pitchers combined to allow all of the game's nine runs in the third and fourth innings. The scoring opened in the top of the third. Ryan LaMarre led off the frame by blasting a ball over the fence in left center field for his third home run (10) in four games. After a 2-for-4 night at the plate, LaMarre is 9-for-22 over his last four games. Additionally, he is 13-for-28 against Chiefs' pitching this season. The lead changed hands in the bottom of the third when Brian Goodwin launched a two-out, two-run home run (13) off Johnson to right field. The PawSox tied the game in the top of the fourth. Allen Craig reached on an error, advanced to third base on a double from Butler and scored on a groundout from Deven Marrero. Syracuse's five-run rally in the bottom of the frame began with a pair of singles. Jason Martinson then lined a ball over the wall in the right field corner for a three-run homer (12). The next batter, Caleb Ramsey, knocked his fourth home run of the season over the right field fence to make it back-to-back shots and a 6-2 Chiefs (59-75) advantage. The next hitter, Chris Bostick, doubled, reached third base on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch. In total, Johnson surrendered seven runs on eight hits and three home runs in four innings pitched. He struck out two and walked none. Johnson had allowed six total runs in his previous five starts combined. He had given up five home runs all season prior to the third inning on Saturday. Chandler Shepherd surrendered only one hit and struck out four in three scoreless innings of relief. Robby Scott delivered a scoreless eighth inning, the 12th time in his last 13 outings that he did not allow a run. Pawtucket has lost 10 of its last 11 games at NBT Bank Stadium dating to July 2015. The PawSox continue their four-game series with the Chiefs tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket lefthander Roenis Elias (9-5, 3.98) is scheduled to make the start against the Nationals' rehabber Joe Ross.
