Columbus, Ohio- The Bats stole the first game of a two-game series against the Columbus Clippers at Huntington Park, 8-3.
The Clippers scored a run in the bottom of the first, a homer in the bottom of the third and an additional run in the bottom of the sixth, taking the lead, 3-0.
Third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean scored on a double play in the top of the eighth, cutting the deficit, 3-1.
The Bats took the lead in the top of the ninth with seven runs, to steal the win, 8-3. Designated hitter Kyle Skipworth scored on a sacrifice bunt, center fielder Juan Perez scored on first baseman Hernan Iribarren's single and second baseman Dilson Herrera scored on Mejias-Brean's single before the Clippers changed pitchers.
With a new pitcher on the mound, shortstop Carlos Triunfel doubled to run in Iribarren and Mejias-Brean, right fielder Jesse Winker scored after catcher Chris Berset walked, and left fielder Kyle Waldrop scored during a groundout play. The Clippers called up their fourth pitcher to the mound who walked Herrera before ending the inning.
Starting for the Bats, lefty Amir Garrett (2-4, 3.32) pitched six innings, allowed two walks, eight hits, and three runs, two earned, while he struck out five. He continued his great stretch with his fourth straight quality start. Keyvius Sampson (3-3, 1.93) took the win after pitching two innings, giving up one hit and one walk, while striking out one.
Starting pitcher for the Clippers, righty Shawn Haviland (1-1, 2.30) threw seven and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits and one run, while striking out five. Relief pitcher Austin Adams (2-4, 4.84) took the loss and his second blown save of the season after pitching one-third inning, giving up four hits, five runs and striking out one.
The Bats finish their two-game series tomorrow against the Clippers at Huntington Park before heading home to face Charlotte for a three-game series. Righty Rookie Davis (0-1, 7.58) takes the mound against Columbus lefty Ryan Merritt (10-7, 3.52) tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
