Louisville Seven Run Ninth Spurs Bats over Clippers

August 28, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release

All was going well for the Columbus Clippers (78-57) on Saturday night at Huntington Park, as they had a 3-1 lead heading into the ninth inning.

Unfortunately, their division rival in Louisville (65-69) would not go away quietly, as the Bats scored six runs without recording an out, and they would go on to top the Clippers by a final score of 8-3 in front of an electric crowd of 11,340.

Columbus went to work immediately in their first time up at bat, as an Erik Gonzalez lead off base hit turned into a run thanks to Yandy Diaz's RBI double to left center field, giving the Clippers the early 1-0 advantage.

Diaz connected for a solo home run in the third inning, his seventh long ball of the season to extend the lead to two.

A Guillermo Quiroz RBI sacrifice fly to left field plating Bradley Zimmer from third made it a 3-0 ball game before Louisville plated one run in the eighth and seven in the ninth.

Southpaw Amir Garrett started for Louisville, as he was responsible for three runs (two earned) on eight hits. He walked two and punched out five.

Right hander Shawn Haviland was magnificent for Columbus, going seven and 2/3 innings, allowing an earned run on five hits.

Keyvius Sampson (3-3) picked up the win in relief for the Bats while Austin Adams (2-4) suffered the loss and the blown save for the Clippers.

The Clippers and Bats will end their regular season series tomorrow afternoon in the Arena District with the first pitch slated for 4:05 p.m. Southpaw Ryan Merritt (10-7, 3.52 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Clippers against righty Rookie Davis (0-1, 7.58 ERA). Not only is tomorrow a Bob Evans Family Day at the ballpark, but tomorrow is also the Great Clips Charity Cut-A-Thon! Local stylists from Central Ohio Great Clips will be on hand to offer complimentary haircuts to fans on the Right Field Concourse throughout the game for charitable donations. All proceeds will benefit Nationwide Children's Hospital.
