Gwinnett Stripers News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (58-77) stopped the four-game winning streak of the Gwinnett Braves (61-73) with a 5-3 win on Saturday night in game two of the three-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Despite the loss, the G-Braves still hold a half-game lead for first place in the International League South Division. Second-place Charlotte (61-74) suffered a 9-5 loss at Norfolk on Saturday night.

Gwinnett took the lead in the top of the second inning, as Ronnier Mustelier drilled a two-out solo home run to left off Durham starter Alex Cobb, who was pitching on a rehab assignment for the Tampa Bay Rays. Mustelier's fourth blast of the season made it 1-0 G-Braves.

But the lead did not last long. In the bottom of the second, G-Braves' starter Chris Ellis walked J.P. Arencibia and Jaff Decker to put two runners on with one out. Jake Goebbert followed with a double to right, scoring both for a 2-1 Bulls' lead. Jake Hager then bounced a double down the third base line, scoring Goebbert for a 3-1 lead.

Durham added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Hager blooped a double down the right field line and scored on a single to right-center by Curt Casali.

The Bulls extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Casey Gillaspie led off with a triple to right and scored from third as Gwinnett shortstop Daniel Castro, with the infield playing in, misplayed a ground ball hit by Arencibia.

The G-Braves made a run in the top of the eighth against Durham reliever Eddie Gamboa, but a base-running mistake proved costly. Castro led off the inning with a double to left, but when the next batter Braeden Schlehuber grounded to the mound, Castro was caught off base and tagged out. Emilio Bonifacio followed with a single to right, moving Schlehuber to third. Gamboa walked Reid Brignac to load the bases and Rio Ruiz then smashed a double to right, scoring both Schlehuber and Bonifacio to make it 5-3.

Gamboa (W, 6-4) would not allow any runs the rest of the way. He completed 5.0 innings with four hits, two earned runs and eight strikeouts. Cobb pitched 4.0 innings with five hits, one earned run and one strikeout.

Ellis (L, 4-6) went 6.0 innings with five hits, five runs (four earned), three walks and seven strikeouts. Jason Hursh worked 2.0 innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.

Bonifacio paced the Gwinnett offense with a 4-for-4 night, including a double and a run scored. Ruiz finished 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Brignac's eighth-inning walk extended his on-base streak to 15 games.

For Durham, Hager was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and one RBI.

The G-Braves and Bulls meet Sunday in the finale of the three-game series in Durham. Gwinnett starts right-hander Wilfredo Boscan (6-7, 3.72), while Durham counters with right-hander Jake Faria (3-4, 3.83). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m., Tony Schiavone will have the broadcast of the game beginning at 4:35 p.m. on 97.7 FM.
