Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The SWB RailRiders dropped a 9-6 decision to the Buffalo Bisons on Monday night at PNC Field. Buffalo (5-7) snapped a three-game slide by scoring three in the ninth.
SLAMMING THE GAVEL: On Monday, Aaron Judge continued his torrid start to the season with a double, an RBI and a walk. Through 10 games played, he has slashed .333/.370/.500/.870 by going 14-for-42 with five extra-base hits. His 14 hits are tied for the third-highest total in the IL. He has been particularly effective against right-handed pitchers (11-for-29, 4XBH, .379/.424/.586/1.010). Judge has hit second in all of his games played thus far, something he did in just 10 of his 61 games played at Triple-A a season ago. Most of his SWB time last year came in the four (21 games) or five-hole (27 games). However, he mostly hit second at Double-A in 2015 (30 games) and at both levels his best performances came in the two hole. At Double-A last year he slashed .310/.370/.579/.949 batting second. At Triple-A, the numbers stood .333/.413/.385/.798. Last night, Judge added his second outfield assist of the season when he nabbed Matt Dominguez at third base in the second inning.
SWISHALICIOUS: Nick Swisher signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and joined the RailRiders last Thursday. Over a dozen MLB seasons, including four with the Yankees from 2009-12, he has hit .249/.351/.447/.799. An All-Star with the Yankees in 2010 when he hit .288/.359/.511/.870 with 29 home runs, he was last in the big leagues last season with both Cleveland and Atlanta. He went 1-for-4 with an infield single Thursday night as the starting first baseman. Friday, he went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead double in the sixth as the DH. Saturday, he went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and one strikeout. After a day off on Sunday, he returned to the fray with a two-hit night including a home run and two RBIs. He has gone 6-for-14 in his four games slashing .429/.471/.714/1.185. The home run was his first since Sept. 27, 2015 at Miami while with the Braves. He has hit 297 professional home runs, including 52 in the minors.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder drove in a run for the third straight game on Monday during a 1-for-4 night. He extended SWB's longest hitting streak of 2016 to nine games. Only Charlotte's Carlos Sanchez, with a 10-gamer that ended last night, has authored a longer string of swinging success in the IL this season.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: The RailRiders made their league-low third miscue of the season last night on a fielding error by second baseman Donovan Solano. The club assembled a seven-game error-free stretch from April 8-15 and owns a league-best .994 fielding percentage. Last year's unit finished fifth in the league with a .982 fielding percentage. The franchise last led the league in fielding percentage at .983 when it did not have a home stadium en route to a division title in 2012.
GIDDY UP: The RailRiders turned a season-best three double plays, lifting their season-long total to 13. Only Gwinnett (18) has turned two more in the IL this season. SWB has not led the league in double plays turned since the 2005 Red Barons posted 175.
OFF THE RAILS: Gary Sanchez hit third for the first time this year and went 0-for-5...He hit mostly fourth (24 times) and third just once during his 35-game run with SWB last season...He also hit third just twice at Double-A last season, while mostly serving as the four (27 games) or five-hole (24 games) hitter...He has not hit third regularly since his first year in pro ball with the Rookie GCL Yankees in 2010...After going hitless in his first five starts, infielder Pete Kozma has quietly put together a five-game hitting streak, going 6-for-17 (.353) with four doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored...Southpaw James Pazos (1-1) suffered the first loss by a RailRiders reliever...Diego Moreno, who recorded the final two outs for SWB's bullpen, became the first member of the team's relief corps to allow an inherited runner to score...That man was the lone run against Pazos' line...Buffalo's nine runs scored on Monday marked the most allowed by the RailRiders since as 12-8 loss at Lehigh Valley on June 30, 2015...No visitor had scored that many at PNC Field since Louisville's record-setting 15-2 rout on June 25, 2015 when the Bats amassed a franchise-record-tying 24 hits (20 singles)...The Bats' 24 hits also tied the SWB record for hits allowed in a game, matching the mark set on July 16, 1996 at Pawtucket.
