INDIANAPOLIS - Eight of nine batters reached base, and the Indians scored 4-runs in the sixth inning to push Indianapolis to a 4-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Monday.
Jung Ho Kang, on rehab assignment from Pittsburgh and playing for the first time at Triple-A as he rehabs from a knee injury suffered last September, started at third base, played seven innings and went 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
The deciding frame began with Kang coaxing a walk. Jason Rogers followed with a line drive off Mud Hens starting pitcher Matt Boyd (1-2) that he fielded but his throw to second drew the second baseman off the bag.
Indianapolis (5-4) standout Josh Bell capitalized with a hard-hit double to the left center field gap that scored Kang and Rogers that erased a Toledo 2-0 lead. A pitching change didn't help the visitors as Willy Garcia promptly followed with a single that advanced Bell to third, then both scored two batters later when Jacob Stallings delivered a two-run single.
Making his second start of the season, both against Toledo (5-3), Indians starter Jameson Taillon ran his string of scoreless innings to eight before sacrificing Toledo's two runs in the third inning. After leading off with a double, Miquel Gonzalez scored on a single by Casey McGehee. Wynton Bernard later scored from third when Josh Bell was unable to cleanly field a grounder near first base.
Two standout defensive plays in the top of the fifth helped thwart a Mud Hens threat. The first came when Bell snuck behind a leaning Steven Moya at first base and tagged him out on a throw from catcher Jacob Stallings for the second out of the inning. Two batters later, with McGehee in scoring position, Danny Ortiz dove on the warning track to snare a line drive by Jordany Valdespin in the center field gap.
