April 19, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens (6-3) outlasted the Indians by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Indianapolis. Toledo is currently in first place in the IL West division.
The Indians jumped on the scoreboard first in the second inning after LF Mel Rojas Jr. tripled over the head of CF Wynton Bernard, scoring C Ed Easley. The Hens roared back in the third inning after a home run off the bat of LF Chad Huffman sent C Miguel Gonzalez and SS Dixon Machado home. Huffman now has a .350 batting average thus far in 2016. 1B Jordany Valdespin continued the big inning for Toledo with a line-drive single to center field, scoring DH Casey McGehee.
Gonzalez had himself a day, coming off catching nine innings the previous night. The Toledo catcher went 3-3 with one run scored. Gonzalez is currently hitting .381 on the season. Valdepsin also recorded three hits on the day, including 1 RBI.
Buck Farmer (3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) came out of the gate a tad shaky, but managed to pitch around a jam in the first inning that saw a hit, walk, and stolen base for Indy. As the game continued, Farmer appeared to settle into his stride and did not allow a run for the remainder of his outing. The righty left the game following the third inning, however, as he is still working through the process of stretching out as a starter.
Thad Weber (5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) came on in relief for his second appearance of the season and tossed five innings, allowing one earned run. Indy's Rojas notched his second RBI of the game when he tallied a single in the sixth inning, the first ER for Weber all season. The Indians continued to chip away at the Mud Hens lead all afternoon, but Weber managed to hold them in check.
Toledo provided a bit of run support in the top of the ninth inning, when 2B Corey Jones reached on a fielder's choice. A throwing error from Indy allowed Valdespin to come home.
Bobby Parnell came on to close the game for the Hens. This was his fourth appearance, and he has successfully saved three games thus far this season for Toledo.
The Hens close out their three-game series tomorrow at Indianapolis, with the first pitch slated for 1:35 p.m. Daniel Norris toes the rubber for Toledo, on a rehab assignment from the Tigers.
