Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 3-2, Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park. The IronPigs put a runner on third with no outs in three separate innings, but Chiefs pitchers survived the bevy of rallies and held on for a 3-2 win.
Syracuse (6-5) extended its record to 5-1 in games where it scored in the first inning after tallying two runs in the first frame. Trea Turner led off the game with a triple on the first pitch of the game against right-hander David Buchanan. He scored a batter later on Brendan Ryan's groundout to second to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Jason Martinson then doubled and Matt Skole walked to put two runners on base. Brian Goodwin extended his on-base streak to 10 straight games with an RBI single to score Martinson and extend the lead to 2-0.
Lehigh Valley (5-6) loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth against Taylor Jordan after two singles and a walk. Will Venable followed with a groundout to second, scoring J.P. Arencibia from third to get the IronPigs within one. After intentionally walked Ryan Jackson, Jordan struck out David Buchanan and Darnell Sweeney to end the threat.
But the IronPigs were not done threatening for a the big inning. Lehigh Valley once again loaded the bases with no one out after three straight singles by Taylor Featherston, Nick Williams and Arencibia. After a pop out, Cedric Hunter grounded into a fielder's choice back to the mound as Jordan got the out at the plate. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Jordan walked Venable on a 3-2 pitch, scoring Williams and tying the score at two.
The Chiefs grabbed the lead right back in the top of the sixth. Skole walked to start the inning and moved to second on a balk by Buchanan. Goodwin followed with a productive at-bat, a groundout to second to move the runner to third. Jhonatan Solano then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Skole and give the Chiefs the lead.
The IronPigs had one more golden opportunity when Arencibia reached third to start the seventh inning on a double and error on Caleb Ramsey in right. But Sammy Solis would strand Arencibia at third, picking up a pair of strikeouts in the frame, to maintain a 3-2 lead.
The Chiefs and IronPigs move their series to Syracuse for a Wednesday doubleheader starting at 4:35 p.m. Syracuse's Paolo Espino and Lehigh Valley's Jake Thompson are scheduled to start game one. Aaron Laffey is penciled in for the Chiefs in game two opposite Reinier Roibal.
